Asia 326: Critical Approaches to Manga and Anime
Summer Term 2 2016
In this course we will critically analyze a variety of manga (print comics), anime (animation), and video games from Japan. A central focus of this course will be on examining the similarities and differences between these cultural forms at the level of “media.” We will consider what makes each of these forms unique and how stories can be adapted and told differently utilizing each platform. We will also use these texts as a vehicle to learn more about Japanese history and culture (and titan attacks!), and even try creating some of the content ourselves.
