What is a TA position?
Each term a limited number of Teaching Assistantships positions are available.
Typical TA duties include: Preparing course materials and/or participating in class instruction, leading discussion sections, tutorials, and review sections; keeping class records; setting, marking and providing feedback on examinations, tests and assignments; holding office hours; invigilating exams and assisting instructors to conduct oral exams; managing and maintaining a website and Connect; duplicating materials; ordering and obtaining AV equipment; demonstrating procedures or setting up demonstrations. TAs may get the opportunity to prepare and present a lecture during the term. TA positions are jobs, and as such, demand a level of professionalism, responsibility and accountability.
How to apply?
For each session ( Winter or Summer) job openings are posted on our website ( under Vacancies) and all students (current and incoming) are informed by an email. An application form is posted on our website. Interested students need to fill out a form, collect supervisors’ signatures and submit the form to the Graduate Secretary. Forms and supervisors’ approvals may be emailed separately to the secretary.
For winter terms, these appointments are usually finalized in August. However, generally it is impossible to make firm decisions about appointments until the enrollments and the overall pool of applications are known at the end of the registration period. We take student preferences to work for a specific course into consideration, but we cannot always satisfy the request.
Will being a TA give me teaching experience?
All TA positions aim to provide students with university-level teaching and professional development experience. The kind of experience will depend on the specific course assignment; however, students can expect to gain experience interacting with faculty and students; designing and marking assignments; and observing and participating in instruction.
How does a TA position work with my academic schedule?
TAs must ensure that they do not have a time conflict between their own courses and their TA assignment course. TAs must be available to attend, if necessary, all sessions of the lecture course they are assigned to. (Expectations will vary by course and should be discussed with the faculty instructor of the course.)
How long does a TA position last?
TA positions are assigned:
Winter session: September – December (T1); January – April ( T2)
Summer session: May-June (T1); July-August (T2)
TA assignments begin on the first day of term and continue through the exam period, as required by the course instructor.
How much does a TA position pay?
Graduate Teaching Assistant I (Doctoral) or equivalent: $31.34/hour
Graduate Teaching Assistant II (Masters) or equivalent: $30.15/hour
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA1): $16.85/hour
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA1): $15.04/hour
Do I have to be on campus to be a TA?
In consultation with the course instructor, TAs must be available to attend any lectures required, to hold office hours, and to conduct other duties that require their presence on campus.
What type of experience should I highlight in my application?
Any relevant experience should be noted. This may include tutoring, mentoring, and/or leadership experience. If you have worked as a TA at another institution or as an undergraduate, this information should also be highlighted.
What can I do to better prepare for a position as a Teaching Assistant?
