PUNJ102 Introductory Punjabi Sections

Spoken and written Punjabi. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of PUNJ 100/101 or PUNJ 102. Students who have taken Punjabi 11 in high school cannot take PUNJ 102 for credit.

Close to 100 million people speak Punjabi in the world. Majority of them live in West Punjab (Pakistan) and East Punjab (India). However, in the last 100 years, Punjabi people have migrated to the other parts of the world and have established sizable and vibrant communities in Britain, Canada, USA, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong, Germany and Italy. PUNJ200 Intermediate Punjabi Sections

Study of the grammar and introduction to Punjabi literature. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of PUNJ 201/202 or PUNJ 200.

Punjabi is written in two scripts - Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi. In West Punjab (Pakistan), it is written in Shahmukhi and in East Punjab (India) it is written in Gurmukhi. At ubc we teach Gurmukhi script to read and write Punjabi. ©Deepay, used under CC BY 2.0.

Advanced grammar and conversation. Major genres of Punjabi literature. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of PUNJ 301/302 or PUNJ 300.

Canadian Parliament Building

Punjabis started coming to Canada in the first decade of the 20th century. According to the 2011 census, there were 460,000 Punjabi speakers in Canada and Punjabi was the 3rd most spoken language in Canada.

Emphasis is on reading and written expression. Analytical writing in English and Punjabi required.
