About

Bin Zheng first started teaching Chinese at UBC as a lecturer in 2017. She has since taught both Chinese language courses and literature courses. In the 1990s, she received her B.A. and M.A. Degree in Chinese Language and Literature at Shaanxi Normal University in China. After moving to Canada, she received a M.A. Degree in Applied Linguistics at UBC. 

Bin was a Chinese lecturer at Shandong University in China from 1998-2009. She was also a Chinese lecturer at Cheongju University and Chungju National University in South Korea, from 2007-2008. Before joining UBC, Bin was involved in Chinese teaching at various institutions such as BCIT Confucius Institute and Simon Fraser University. 

Bin values every student who comes to her classes. She deems student-centered teaching as the most important principle, taking the role of a guide and a curator. Students’ originality and critical thinking are highly valued in her classes. Moreover, she commits to introducing innovative pedagogical strategies in her teaching. Bin’s research interests include Chinese literature, classical poetry, pre-modern history and pedagogy. She also holds expertise in Chinese metrical poem writing. Bin encourages students to take UBC Chinese poetry courses with this verse: “莫道三山悬海外,诗心一瓣即兰槎。”
