An Introduction to the Series
What does it mean for a work of literature to be great in an age when writers outnumber readers, and literary creation is increasingly shaped by the demands of media markets and ideological conformity? Today, writing often echoes rather than questions dominant cultural scripts. The expressive is everywhere—but the disruptive, the transformative, the truly necessary—has become rare.
This series asks a timely question: What distinguishes a work that unsettles inherited categories and opens new possibilities of life and language? Greatness, here, refers not to formal virtuosity or public acclaim but to the capacity of literature to interrupt consensus, shift perception, and generate new horizons of meaning. Great works do not merely reflect reality—they reconfigure it.
The series seeks to propose a critical framework for identifying and understanding such greatness, not as a fixed standard but as a set of forces literature can unleash: the power to expose the limits of dominant discourses, foreground suppressed experiences, and offer radically different visions of the world.
Our focus is not on literary history or generic change but on those works—especially from Iran and Afghanistan—that remain under-recognized yet have transformed their worlds. These are the literary acts that resist appropriation and open conceptual and affective space for other ways of being.
The series will prioritize the performative force of literature: its ability to act, provoke, and reveal. Each session will read a selected work as an intervention into dominant narratives—an act that demands response. And in doing so, we ask: what ways of thinking and living become possible in its wake?
All sessions will be offered in-person and online simultaneously to invite a diverse, cross-border audience into the conversation.

مقدمهای بر این نشستها
در روزگاری که تعداد نویسندگان از خوانندگان پیشی گرفتهاست و تولید ادبی زیر سلطهی رسانهها، بازار، و گفتمانهای مسلط شکل میگیرد، سخن گفتن از «عظمت» یک اثر ادبی و بزرگی یک نویسنده یا شاعر به چه معناست؟ این روزها، اغلب نوشتن بهجای آنکه کلیشهها و گفتمانهای رایج را به چالش بگیرد، اغلب بازتولید همان صداهاییست که میکوشند خود را طبیعی و منطقی جلوه دهند. ما در زمانهی فزونیِ بیان زندگی میکنیم، اما ندرتاً با آن نوع بیانی مواجه میشویم که به راستی گفتمان مسلط را دگرگون کند.
در این سلسله نشستها میپرسیم: چه اثری در ادبیات شایستهی صفت «بزرگ» است؟ نه از حیث زیباییشناسی یا مقبولیت عام، بلکه از آن رو که به جابجاییِ بنیادها، به گشودن افقهای تازه، به برهم زدن اجماع موجود میانجامد. اثر بزرگ، واقعیت را صرفاً بازنمایی نمیکند، بلکه آن را بازآفرینی میکند. بنابراین، هدف این مجموعه نشستها، ارائهی چهارچوبی انتقادی برای شناسایی و فهم «اصالت و بزرگی» در ادبیات به عنوان نیرویی است که میتواند گفتمانهای مسلط را به چالش بکشد، تجربههای سرکوبشده را برجسته کند، و چشماندازهای نوینی از زندگی و معنا را پیش روی مخاطب بگشاید.
در همین راستا، آثاری برجستهای از جریانسازترین نویسندگان، شعرا و نمایشنامهنویسان را موشکافانه بررسی خواهیم کرد تا از قِبَل آن به ملاکهایی کلی برای شناخت آثار هنری بزرگ دستیابیم. با این وجود، تمرکز ما بر آن آثاریست—بهویژه از ایران و افغانستان—که کمتر دیده شدهاند ولی در عمل، امکانی نو برای اندیشیدن و زیستن پیش نهادهاند. نشان میدهیم چگونه این آثار نه تنها از همصدایی با گفتمان مسلط سر باز زدهاند، بلکه ساختارهای زبان، ذهن، و اجتماع را از نو طرحریزی کردهاند.
تمامی نشستها بهصورت حضوری و آنلاین بهطور همزمان برگزار خواهند شد تا امکان مشارکت وسیعتر و متنوعتری فراهم گردد.

First Session: The Giants of Modern Persian Literature – A Critical Examination of the Concept of “Greatness” in Literature
- Topic: General definitions of the critical concept of literary “greatness” and its criteria.
In this session, we will discuss theoretical perspectives on the concept of “greatness” in literature and, in doing so, outline the framework for future sessions. We will see that “greatness” does not mean mythologizing one or several figures, but rather refers to the ability of a literary figure to be influential and to initiate a current, as opposed to others who merely perfect, amplify, or repeat an existing literary trend.
To illustrate this, we will examine the origins of modern Persian literature during the Constitutional Revolution, comparing two literary orientations: one that looks to the past in an attempt to restore Iran’s former grandeur, and another—exemplified by Nima Yushij—that looks to the future in order to create something radically new.

جلسه نخست: بزرگان ادب معاصر فارسی: بررسی انتقادی مفهوم «بزرگی» در ادبیات
موضوع نشست: تعاریف کلی مفهوم انتقادی بزرگی در ادبیات و ملاکهای آن
توضیح:
در این جلسه مفاهیم نظری ناظر بر مفهوم «بزرگی» را به بحث و گفتگو خواهیم گذاشت و بدین ترتیب چشم انداز جلسات آتی را هم مشخص خواهیم کرد. خواهیم دید که «بزرگی» ابدا به معنی اسطورهسازی از یک یا چند شخصیت نیست بلکه دال بر اثر گذار بودن و جریانساز بودن یک شخصیت ادبی در مقابل دیگرانی است که بیشتر کامل کننده به اوج رساننده یا صرفا تکرار کننده یک جریان ادبی هستند.
برای روشن شدن مطلب، منشا و مبدا ادبیات معاصر فارسی و در جریانات مشروطه، دو رویکرد جریانساز و آثار نویسندگانی که نقش اساسی در شکلگیری آنها دارند را با هم مقایسه خواهیم کرد: رویکردی که رو به گذشته دارد و تلاش میکند عظمت پیشین ایران را بازگرداند در مقابل جریان نیمایی که تلاش میکند با نگاهی به آینده، طرحی نو دراندازد.

Guest Speaker
Amir Ali Nojoumian is an English language and literature professor at Dawson College in Montreal, Canada. Before this, he taught English Literature and Critical Theory at Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran, for twenty years. Dr. Nojoumian completed his MA and PhD studies at the University of Leicester, UK. His doctorate focused on the philosophy of literature through readings of Jacques Derrida. He was a member of an interdisciplinary research group called the “Tehran Semiotics Circle” between 2002 and 2018.
Dr. Nojoumian has had various research projects inspired by New Historicism, leading him to explore the intricate relationship between historical narratives, discourses, and ideologies. This has culminated in an interest in investigating what Louis Montrose aptly terms the “historicity of texts and the textuality of history.” In this area, his recent contribution is a book chapter for the Palgrave Handbook of Children’s Film and Television entitled “Constructing Childhood in Modern Iranian Children’s Cinema: A Cultural History.”
امیرعلی نجومیان، استاد زبان و ادبیات انگلیسی در کالج داوسون در مونترالِ کانادا است. وی پیش از این به مدت بیست سال در دانشگاه شهید بهشتی تهران به تدریس ادبیات انگلیسی و نظریه انتقادی پرداخت. دکتر نجومیان تحصیلات کارشناسی ارشد و دکتری خود را در دانشگاه لستر انگلستان به پایان رساند. دکترای او بر روی فلسفه ادبیات و خوانشی از آثار ژاک دریدا متمرکز بود. او بین سالهای 1380 تا 1396 عضو یک گروه پژوهشی میانرشتهای به نام «حلقه نشانهشناسی تهران» بود.
دکتر نجومیان پروژههای تحقیقاتی مختلفی با الهام از تاریخگرایی نو داشته است که او را به کشف رابطه پیچیده بین روایتهای تاریخی، گفتمانها و ایدئولوژیها سوق داده است. این پروژهها به به تحقیق در مورد آنچه که لویی مونتروز به درستی «تاریخی بودن متون و متنی بودن تاریخ» مینامد، انجامیده است. یکی از نوشتههای اخیر او در این زمینه، فصلی از کتاب راهنمای فیلم و تلویزیون کودک پالگریو با عنوان «ساخت دوران کودکی در سینمای کودک ایران مدرن: تاریخی فرهنگی» است.
Hosts
Dr. Hessam Dehghani earned his first PhD in Linguistics from Allameh Tabātabāi University, on the “Structural Analysis and Phenomenological Study of Persian Literature,” in 2012. He then earned another PhD in Philosophy from Boston College in 2019. Between August 2019 and December 2020, he was a post-doctoral fellow and associate researcher at Harvard Divinity School and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, where he focused his research on the formation of Persianate identity in Persian mystic literature. He has presented on different aspects of Persian mystic literature regularly at Harvard University and Boston College. His most recent lecture exploring the literary theory behind the work of Rahnavard-i Zaryab was delivered on June 18, 2022 as part of the Alireza Ahmadian Lecture Series at the University of British Columbia.
Besides his research interests, he has been teaching English as a foreign language in Iran since 2000, and Persian and Arabic in North America for the past 8 years. Since 2012, he has taught Persian and Arabic and has directed the Persian program single-handedly at Boston College for which he received a teaching award and was nominated for a leadership award from that institution. In 2021, Dr. Dehghani started his tenure-track position as an assistant professor of teaching Persian language and Culture at the University of British Columbia. In pedagogy, his interests lie in content-based instruction and critical heritage language education for which he has passed multiple CAL, ACFTL and STARTALK workshops and received several certifications from 2013 up to present. He is passionate about implementing technology in teaching Persian. Implementing the latest findings in critical heritage education and second language acquisition, he and his wife, Mahtab Sirdani, devised a new method of teaching literacy to heritage learners of Persian, which they call Collaborative Storytelling (CT).
To promote public humanities, that is, the education of humanities to the community of Persianates outside their native land, since March 2021, Dr. Dehghani and a team of enthusiastic students of his have started UBC Perisan Literature Reading Club through which they hold weekly literature reading sessions and monthly lectures in Persian. In these monthly sessions, accompanied by a panel of experts as part of a project titled: “The Oral History of Modern Persian Literature,” they interview the most prominent figures of modern Persian Literature especially the literary figures in migration and exile.
Dr. Farzan Sojoodi is a retired full professor of semiotics and linguistics at the Tehran University of Arts. He obtained his B.A in English Literature, M.A, and Ph.D. in Linguistics from Allameh Tabataba’i University.
His primary interests are critical semiotics, discourse theory, cultural semiotics, and intercultural studies. He has published some books in Persian, the most important of which are Applied Semiotics, Semiotics: Theory and Practice, and Semiotics and Literature. He has published nearly 100 articles on theoretical issues in cultural semiotics, intercultural studies, literature and media, Persian language, and literature.
He was one of the founders of the Tehran Society of Semiotics and Forum for Indo-Iranian Studies [FIIRST], and he is a member of the Linguistics Society of Iran.
As an invited professor, he has taught some courses in post-graduate programs at the University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modares University, the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies, and Elm International Academy.
فرزان سجودی، استاد پیشین نشانهشناسی و زبانشناسی دانشگاه هنر تهران است. او لیسانس ادبیات انگلیسی و فوقلیسانس و دکتری زبانشناسی را از دانشگاه علامه طباطبایی گرفته است.
حوزههای اصلی مطالعاتی او عبارتند از نشانهشناسی نظری، نشانهشناسی انتقادی، نظریه گفتمان و مطالعات فرهنگی. از او چندین کتاب و دهها مقاله تالیفی و ترجمه در زمینه مطالعات نظری و روششناختی در علوم انسانی و مطالعات انتقادی ادبیات و هنر منتشر شده است. نشانهشناسی کاربردی، نشانهشناسی: نظریه و عمل و نشانهشناسی ادبیات از تالیفات او هستند. از ترجمههای او میتوان به تفسیر و بیشتفسیر (امبرتو اکو)، ابرساختگرایی: فلسفه ساختگرایی و پساساختگرایی (ریچارد هارلند)، ساختگرایی، پساساختگرایی و مطالعات ادبی (مجموعه مقالات به انتخاب فرزان سجودی)، ویتگنشتاین: نظریه و هنر (ریچارد آلن و ملکوم تروی) و مقدمات نظریه ادبی (برتنز) اشاره کرد.
