The Department of Asian Studies is excited to invite you to our annual Welcome Back Night on September 18!
Whether you’re brand new to UBC or returning for another year, come celebrate Asian cultures and languages and learn more about the Asian Studies programs. You’ll get the chance to meet our faculty and staff, and mingle with other students during an evening filled with fun activities! You’ll also have the chance to win raffle prizes (Asian Studies Merchandise)!

Open to all UBC students! Light refreshments will be served.
Registration is required and on a first-come-first-served basis.
Booths
Arabic: Learn how to write your name with the second-most widely used alphabetic writing system in the world 📝
Cantonese: Utilize your strategy skills in the tile game of Mahjong 🀄️
Chinese: Play various small games such as character matching, diabolo, pitch-pot, and shuttlecock or Jianzi, a traditional Chinese sport.
Hindi-Urdu: See your name in a different light… try writing in both Devangari and Nastaliq scripts!
Japanese: Test your balance, focus, and coordination with Kendama, and enjoy the beauty of Mizu-Shuuji (water calligraphy) by writing your name in Japanese 🖌️
Korean: Experience Korean culture through fashion (try on Hanbok, the traditional Korean attire!) and crafts (make yourself a keychain of your favorite word in Hangeul, the Korean alphabet!)
Persian: Challenge yourself to write your name in Persian calligraphy!
Sanskrit: Test yourself and compete against others in a fun Sanskrit-themed Kahoot 💯
