The Alireza Ahmadian Lecture in Iranian and Persianate Studies prese nts: Between Dusk and Dawn: Forugh Farrokhzad and the Art of Living in Betw een on April 18\, 2026.

This presentation brings together Forugh Farr okhzad’s poetry\, film\, letters\, interviews\, and prose to offer a portra it of a writer who reshaped modern Iranian literature by inhabiting its in- between spaces. Standing at the threshold of private and public\, inside an d outside\, silence and speech\, Farrokhzad expanded Iran’s literary langua ge\, reach\, and imaginative boundaries. The talk listens closely to a voic e that continues to travel across time and borders\, drawing an ever-wideni ng circle of listeners.

This talk will be presented in English. It is free and open to the public.

Farzaneh Milani is Raymond J. Nelson Professor Emerita of Iranian literature and Ge nder Studies at the University of Virginia. She has published several artic les and books\, most recently The Literary Biography of Forugh Farrokhzad w ith Unpublished Letters. The Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy invited Milani to join it as a member of its Board of External Experts for Literat ure in 2021. Milani served in that capacity for three years.

About the Alireza Ahmadian Lectures in Iranian and Persianate St udies: Alireza Ahmadian (1981 – 2019) was an enthusiastic researcher\, a co nsummate socio-political analyst\, and an opinion leader on foreign policy who nurtured the virtues of diplomatic dialogue and liberal democracy. Alir eza was a proud and devoted UBC alumnus\, supporter of UBC’s Department of Asian Studies\, and beloved member of Canadian-Iranian Community. The depar tment renamed this lecture series in his honour in 2019. Alireza’s friends in the community have provided funding to support this series\, and this ge nerous gift will see these important academic and community engagement even ts supported through to the end of the 2025/2026 academic year.
