The Persian Language and Iranian Studies Initiative at UBC\, the UBC Persi an Literature Reading Club\, and the UBC Persian Club are hosting a series of events analyzing the literature of migration and exile in Modern Persian Literature in Spring 2022. The second session of the Spring 2022 series fe atures guest speaker Sorour Kasmaï who will delve in to the linguistic challenges every author wrestles with in composing a work \, the strategies they deploy\, and decisions they have to make. The sessio ns are designed and run by Bahram Moradi\, Hessam Dehghani and Fariba Seddi ghim.

Sorour Kasmaï is a novelist\, translator an d publisher who was born in Teheran in a Francoph ile family. She attended primary and secondary school at the franco-iranian Lycée Razi. She later studied Russian language a nd literature in Paris. In 1987\, thanks to a university scholarship\, she went to Moscow and studied Russian theater. Passionate about theater\, she became\, a few years later\, a translator and interpreter of Russian on sta ge and at the Paris Opera. At the same time\, she worked on Tajik oral lite rature and published a series of CDs of folk and traditional music from Taj ikistan\, as well as popular and traditional Iranian music (Shadjarian\, Si ma Bina\, etc.). In 2002\, her first novel\, The Glass Cemetery\, wa s published by Actes Sud. She also founded and directed at the same publish er\, the collection “Horizons Pe rsans” (Persian Horizons) dedicated to Iranian and Afgha n literatures. Since then\, she has published The Valley of the Eagles\, the autobiography of an escape (Adelf Award 2007) and A Day Before the End of the World. She also translated into French several novels an d short stories from her compatriots\, including My Uncle Napoleon b y Iraj Pezechkzad and Leaving\, Staying\, Returning by Shahrokh Mesk oob.
