Diwali, or Deepavali—meaning “an array of dīpaks (lamps)”—is the most widely celebrated festival in India and across the Indian diaspora. Traditionally observed on Amavasya (the darkest night or new moon day), it usually falls in late October or early November.

The festival marks the victory of good over evil and the beginning of the New Year in many parts of India. Diwali brings together diverse South Asian communities and is observed by people of many faiths, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. During this time, homes are illuminated with diyas (oil lamps), candles, and colorful lights. Families and friends exchange gifts, share sweets, and recite prayers.

We invite students, staff, and faculty to celebrate the diversity of South Asian culture through presentations, traditional dance performances, and music.

Light refreshments will be served. Attendance is free and no registration is required.

This event is co-sponsored by the UBC Asian Library.
