An Introduction to the Series
What does it mean for a work of l iterature to be great in an age when writers outnumber readers\ , and literary creation is increasingly shaped by the demands of media mark ets and ideological conformity? Today\, writing often echoes rather than qu estions dominant cultural scripts. The expressive is everywhere—but the dis ruptive\, the transformative\, the truly necessary—has become rare.< /p>
This series asks a timely question: What distinguishes a work that unsettles inherited categories and opens new possibilities of life and language? Greatness\, here\, refers not to forma l virtuosity or public acclaim but to the capacity of literature to interru pt consensus\, shift perception\, and generate new horizons of meaning. Gre at works do not merely reflect reality—they reconfigure it.
The series seeks to propose a cr itical framework for identifying and understanding such greatness\, not as a fixed standard but as a set of forces literature can unleash: the power t o expose the limits of dominant discourses\, foreground suppressed experien ces\, and offer radically different visions of the world.
The se ries will prioritize the perform ative force of literature: its ability to act\, provoke\, and reveal. Each session will read a selected wo rk as an intervention into dominant narratives—an act that demands response . And in doing so\, we ask: what ways of thinking and living become possibl e in its wake?
All sessions w ill be offered in-person and online simultaneously to invite a diverse\, cross-border audience into the conversation.

مقدمهای بر این نشستها
در روزگاری که تعد اد نویسندگان از خوانندگان پیشی گرفتهاست و تولید ادبی زیر سلطهی رسانهها، بازار، و گفتمانهای مسلط شکل میگیرد، سخن گفتن از «عظمت» یک اثر ادبی و بزرگ ی یک نویسنده یا شاعر به چه معناست؟ این روزها، اغلب نوشتن بهجای آنکه کلیشه ها و گفتمانهای رایج را به چالش بگیرد، اغلب بازتولید همان صداهاییست که می کوشند خود را طبیعی و منطقی جلوه دهند. ما در زمانهی فزونیِ بیان زندگی میک نیم، اما ندرتاً با آن نوع بیانی مواجه میشویم که به راستی گفتمان مسلط را دگ رگون کند.
در این سلسله نشستها میپرسیم: چه اثری در ادبیات شایستهی صفت «بزر گ» است؟ نه از حیث زیباییشناسی یا مقبولیت عام، بلکه از آن رو که به جابجاییِ بنیادها، به گشودن افقهای تازه، به برهم زدن اجماع موجود میانجامد. اثر بزر گ، واقعیت را صرفاً بازنمایی نمیکند، بلکه آن را بازآفرینی میکن د. بنابراین، هدف این مجموعه نشستها، ارائهی چهارچوبی انتقادی برای شناسایی و فهم «اصالت و بزرگی» در ادبیات به عنوان نیرویی است که میتواند گفتمانهای مسلط را به چالش بکشد، تجربههای سرکوبشده را برجسته کند، و چشماندازهای نوی نی از زندگی و معنا را پیش روی مخاطب بگشاید.
در همین راستا، آثاری برجستهای ا ز جریانسازترین نویسندگان، شعرا و نمایشنامهنویسان را موشکافانه بررسی خواه یم کرد تا از قِبَل آن به ملاکهایی کلی برای شناخت آثار هنری بزرگ دستیابیم. با این وجود، تمرکز ما بر آن آثاریست—بهویژه از ایران و افغانستان—که کمتر دیده شدهاند ولی در عمل، امکانی نو برای اندیشیدن و زیستن پیش نهادهاند. نشا ن میدهیم چگونه این آثار نه تنها از همصدایی با گفتمان مسلط سر باز زدهاند، بلکه ساختارهای زبان، ذهن، و اجتماع را از نو طرحریزی کردهاند.

Third Session: Critical Perspectives on “Great Authors” of Feminist Literature
This session explores the emergence and influence of femin ist discourse in modern Persian literature. We ask: which authors and works have shaped a dominant\, transformative current of feminist thought? As in previous discussions\, we revisit the idea that literary “greatness” is no t merely a matter of positive acclaim but one of discursive formation and c ultural impact. Through a critical engagement with questions of gender and the representation of women\, this session examines both feminist and anti- feminist tendencies in modern Persian literary production.
The session will include a focused comparative analysis of sele cted works by Shahrnush Parsipur—notably Women Without Men and The Blue Spring of Kathmandu—to explore how these texts articul ate and challenge gendered identities and cultural narratives.

< span style="font-weight: 400\;">کدام نویسندگان و در چه آثاری، جریانی غالب و اثرگذار از زن باوری را به راه انداختهاند؟ بار دیگر خواهیم دید چگونه از دی دگاه ما، بزرگ بودن صرفا معنای ایجابی ندارد بلکه مسئله گفتمانسازی و اثرگذار ی است. در این جلسه، برای بررسی جنسیت و به ویژه زن بودن، دو جریان زنباوری و آثار مربوط به آن را در ادبیات مدرن فارسی مورد بررسی انتقادی قرارخواهیم داد .

Shahrnush Parsipur (born 1946\, Tehran) is one o
f Iran’s most courageous and influential contemporary writers\, whose life
and work embody the struggle for freedom\, creativity\, and truth. Her nove
ls — Women Without Men and Touba and the Meaning of Night — r
evolutionized Persian literature by blending myth\, mysticism\, and realism
through a distinctly feminine lens. Having endured imprisonment\, censorsh
ip\, and exile\, Parsipur continues to write and speak from the United Stat
es as a political refugee. Her works\, translated into more than ten langua
ges\, have earned her international acclaim and established her as the most
powerful voice of Iranian women in modern literature.
شهرنوش پارس یپور (زادهی ۱۳۲۴ در تهران) از برجستهترین و شجاعترین نویسندگان معاصر ایران است که زندگی و آثارش با تجربههای شخصی از زندان، مهاجرت و مقاومت در برابر سانسور گره خورده است. او نویسندهی آثاری ماندگار چون زنان بدون مرد ان و طوبا و معنای شب است که مرز میان واقعیت، خیال و اسطوره را در ادبیات فارسی دگرگون کردند. پارسیپور که بهخاطر آزادی اندیشه بارها زندانی شد، اکنون در آمریکا بهعنوان پناهنده سیاسی زندگی میکند و همچنان به نوشتن، ترجمه و گفتوگو با جهان ادامه میدهد. آثار او به بیش از ده زبان ترجمه شده و جایگاهش بهعنوان یکی از مهمترین صدای زنان در ادبیات معاصر فارسی تثبیت شده است.
Dr. Hessam Dehghani earned his first PhD in Linguistics from Allameh Tabātabāi Unive rsity\, on the “Structural Analysis and Phenomenological Study of Persian L iterature\,” in 2012. He then earned another PhD in Philosophy from Boston College in 2019. Between August 2019 and December 2020\, he was a post-doct oral fellow and associate researcher at Harvard Divinity School and the Cen ter for Middle Eastern Studies\, where he focused his research on the forma tion of Persianate identity in Persian mystic literature. He has presented on different aspects of Persian mystic literature regularly at Harvard University and Boston College. His most recent lec ture exploring the literary theory behind the work of Rahnavard-i Zaryab wa s delivered on June 18\, 2022 as part of the Alireza Ahm adian Lecture Series at the Uni versity of British Columbia.
Besides his research interests\, he has been teaching English as a foreign language in Iran since 2000\, and Persian and Arabic in North America for t he past 8 years. Since 2012\, he has taught Persian and Arabic and has dire cted the Persian program single-handedly at Boston College for which he rec eived a teaching award and was nominated for a leadership award from that i nstitution. In 2021\, Dr. Dehghani started his tenure-track position as an assistant professor of teaching Persian language and Culture at the Univers ity of British Columbia. In pedagogy\, his interests lie in content-based i nstruction and critical heritage language education for which he has passed multiple CAL\, ACFTL and STARTALK workshops and received several certifica tions from 2013 up to present. He is passionate about implementing technolo gy in teaching Persian. Implementing the latest findings in critical herita ge education and second language acquisition\, he and his wife\, Mahtab Sir dani\, devised a new method of teaching literacy to heritage learners of Pe rsian\, which they call Collaborative Storytelling (CT).
To promote public humanities\, that is\, the ed ucation of humanities to the community of Persianates outside their native land\, since March 2021\, Dr. Dehghani and a team of enthusiastic students of his have started UBC Perisan Literature Reading Club through which they hold weekly literature reading sessions and monthly lectures in Persian. In these monthly sessions\, accompanied by a panel of experts as part of a pr oject titled: “The Oral History of Modern Persian Literature\,” they interv iew the most prominent figures of modern Persian Literature especially the literary figures in migration and exile.
Dr. Farzan Sojoodi is a retired full professor of semiotics and linguistics at the Tehran
University of Arts. He obtained his B.A in English Literature\, M.A\, and P
h.D. in Linguistics from Allameh Tabataba’i University.
His primary interests are critical semiotics\, discourse theory\, cultural semiotics\, and intercultural studies. He has p ublished some books in Persian\, the most important of which are Applied Semiotics\, Semiotics: Theory and Practice\, and Semiotics and Literature< span style="font-weight: 400\;">. He has published nearly 100 articles on t heoretical issues in cultural semiotics\, intercultural studies\, literatur e and media\, Persian language\, and literature.
He was one of the founders of the Tehran Society of Se miotics and Forum for Indo-Irani an Studies [FIIRST]\, and he is a member of the Linguistics Society of Iran .
As an invited professo r\, he has taught some courses in post-graduate programs at the University of Tehran\, Tarbiat Modares University\, the Institute for Humanities and C ultural Studies\, and Elm International Academy.
