The Alireza Ahmadian Lecture in Iranian and Persianate Studies pr
esents: Exploring “Liku”: Baluchi Folk Poetry’s Brief Beauty on December 9\, 2023. This lecture will be presented in Persian.
Liku is an ancient\, monorhyme poet
ic form consisting of a single verse\, prevalent in Southeast Iran (Baluchi
stan and the southern areas of the Kerman province). It is categorized into
two types: the short Liku\, with five syllables\, and the long Liku\, comp
rising ten syllables. The short Liku\, possibly among the world's briefest
poetic forms\, is unique in its brevity and structure. Each rhythmic and rh
yming poem is composed of four words\, with each line containing five sylla
bles. The poems are crafted to allow individual interpretation by readers\,
enabling personal connections with the situations depicted. Liku typically
adopts a pictorial\, symbolic\, and narrative style\, often concluding wit
h open-ended narratives. Themes in Liku poetry commonly explore love\, yout
hful mortality\, travel\, exile\, and nature's allure. This poetic form evo
lves with time\, integrating contemporary elements\, themes\, and social nu
ances\, transitioning from traditional motifs to modern expressions.
Speaker
Mansour Alimoradi\, born in 1976\, in Sout
h Kerman\, began writing stories and poems during his high school years. He
garnered recognition in various independent poetry\, humor\, and storytell
ing festivals in Kerman Province. At 22\, Alimoradi embarked on his profess
ional journey with Roodbarzamin magazine\, delving into humor\, reporting\,
literary criticism\, and folk culture. Concurrently\, he initiated the com
pilation of an eighteen-volume encyclopedia on the folk culture and literat
ure of Southeast Iran\, with seven volumes currently published. Alimoradi's
focus on creative fiction has so far resulted in nine fiction works in adu
lt and young adult novel genres. Many of these works have received prestigi
ous Iranian literary awards\, including the “Haft Eqlim” award\, the “Fakhe
rh-ye Saba” award (jointly with Maestro Ali Nasirian)\, and the “Bastani Pa
rizi” award.

About the Alireza Ahmadian Lectures in Iranian and Persianat
e Studies: Alireza Ahmadian (1981 – 2019) was an enthusiastic researcher\,
a consummate socio-political analyst\, and an opinion leader on foreign pol
icy who nurtured the virtues of diplomatic dialogue and liberal democracy.
Alireza was a proud and devoted UBC alumnus\, supporter of UBC’s Department
of Asian Studies\, and beloved member of Canadian-Iranian Community. The d
epartment renamed this lecture series in his honour in 2019. Alireza’s frie
nds in the community have provided funding to support this series\, and thi
s generous gift will see these important academic and community engagement
events supported through to the end of the 2025/2026 academic year. Read More
