This talk is part of the Arts Multilingual Week “Linguaphobia, Linguistic Indifference, the Monolingual University” symposium and will be presented in English.
Dr. Nesrine Basheer will share insights from a collaborative curriculum redesign carried out with heritage Arabic students at UBC. Together, they challenged monolingual assumptions, affirmed the legitimacy of Arabic dialects, and co-created learning spaces that foster belonging and authentic linguistic agency. Drawing on student reflections, the talk will show how fear of language difference and attitudes of indifference emerge in the classroom, and how student-led partnerships can work to transform them.
This talk is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
