Throughout history\, the political role of poetics (and artistic creati on in general) has been a subject of interest for scholars. Plato criticize d poets for misleading the public and advocated for their expulsion from hi s ideal republic\, while Aristotle regarded poetics as superior and more ph ilosophical than historiography\, considering poetry essential for examinin g reality. Literature and art reflect and reproduce the prevailing discours es in a society. Furthermore\, literary and artistic works can either reinf orce dominant ideologies or challenge them\, opening new horizons of meanin g for various concepts. For example\, literature can serve as a propaganda tool to glorify war\, or it can depict the realities surrounding it\, foste ring social awareness.
In the upcoming academic year's series of panels organized by the Persian Literat ure Reading Club at the University of British Columbia\, under the initiati ve of Dr. Farzan Sojoodi and Dr. Hessam Dehghani\, we will explore the lite rature of awakening. These panels will feature guest writers and researcher s who will examine examples of literary works across various genres\, inclu ding poetry\, short stories\, and novels\, that employ a deconstructive app roach to counter dominant discourses. By revealing the internal cracks or c ontradictions within the dominant discourse\, these works pave the way for social awakening.
Each specia lized panel will focus on a particular genre—such as poetry\, short stories \, or novels—centered around a specific theme.

از روزگاران کهن، نق ش سیاسی بوطیقا (آفرینش هنری به طور کلی) مورد توجه اندیشمندان بوده است. افلا طون شاعران را مسئول آموزش ناصواب و گمراهی عامهی مردم میداند و حکم به اخرا ج آنها از آرمانشهر فرضیاش میدهد در حالیکه ارسطو بوطیقا را برتر و فلسفیت ر از تاریخنگاری قلمداد و شعرپردازی را برای مداقه در امور واقع لازم میداند . ادبیات و هنر گفتمانهای موجود در یک جامعه را بازنمایی و بازتولید میکند. در ضمن، آثار ادبی و هنری گاه در خدمت طبیعیسازی عامه و مسلط هستند، و گاه قا درند آنها را به چالش کشیده و افقهای معنایی نوینی را پیش روی مفاهیم مختلف بگشایند. به فرض ادبیات هم میتواند ابزار تبلیغاتی برای مقدس جلوه دادن جنگ باشد و هم با به تصویر کشیدن واقعیتهای پیرامون آن، زمینه بیداری اجتماعی در این خصوص را فراهم .آورد
در سلسله نشستهای سال جاری تحصیلی در باشگاه ادبیات ف ارسی خوانی دانشگاه بریتیش کلمبیا به ابتکار دکتر فرزان سجودی و دکتر حسام دهق انی سلسله نشستهایی را برگزار خواهیم کرد که به بررسی ادبیات بیداری میپرداز د. در این نشستها با حضور نویسندگان و پژوهشگران مهمان به بررسی نمونههایی ا ز آثار ادبی در ژانرهای مختلف از جمله شعر، داستان کوتاه و رمان خواهیم پرداخت که با رویکردی واسازانه عملی پاد گفتمانی را در برابر گفتمان مسلط سامان مید هند و بدین ترتیب ترکها یا تناقضات درونی گفتمان غالب را آشکار میکنند تا زم ینه بیداری اجتماعی در آن خصوص فراهم آید.
در هر یک از این میزگردهای تخصصی، آ ثاری از یک ژانر مثلا شعر، داستان کوتاه یا رمان، در مورد موضوعی واحد بررسی خ واهد شد.

Alireza Abiz is a multi-award-winning poet\, literary scholar\, and translator.
Born in South Kh orasan\, Iran in 1968\, Abiz studied English Literature in Mashhad and Tehr an universities and received his PhD in Creative Writing –Poetry from Newca stle University in the UK. Abiz has written extensively on Persian contempo rary literature and culture. His scholarly book ‘Censorship of Literature i n Post-Revolutionary Iran: Politics and Culture since 1979’ was published i n 2020 by I. B. Taurus (Bloomsbury). He has so far published five collectio ns of poetry in Persian\; ‘Stop! We Must Get Off!’\, ‘Spaghetti with Mexica n Sauce’\, ‘I Hear My Desk as a Tree’\, ‘13/1 Koohsangee Street’\, and ‘Bla ck Line- London Underground’ (winner of the Shamlou Award). A selection of his poetry translated into English ‘The Kindly Interrogator’ was published by Shearsman in 2021.
Abiz h as translated some leading poets including Rainer Maria Rilke\, Basil Bunti ng\, Derek Walcott\, Jack Kerouac\, and C.K. Williams into Persian. His tra nslation of ‘African Contemporary Art’ won him the Iranian Book of the Seas on Award for the best translation in visual arts in 2007.English\, German\, Italian\, Romanian\, Czech\, Slovak\, Bosnian\, Bengali\, and Arabic trans lations of his poetry have been published in numerous journals including th e Rialto\, Asymptote\, Modern Poetry in Translation\, as well as different anthologies and have been showcased in public places including Stuttgart Un derground. He has performed at many international festivals and acted as ju dge in numerous Persian language literary prizes. He is a board member in P oetry Translation Centre and chaired the judges in Sarah Maguire Poetry in Translation Prize 2020-2021.
Abiz is the co-founder of MAHA\, a Persian language online platform for ar t and literature\, and Editor of Radio Now podcasts. He lives in London whe re he works as a creative writing lecturer\, translator and researcher.

از علیرضا آبیز تاکنون پنج مجموعه شعر فارسی به عناوین نگه دار باید پیاده < b>شویم (نارنج، ۱۳۷۷)، اسپاگت ی با سس مکزیکی (ث الث، ۱۳۸۳)، از میز من صدای درختی می آید (نگاه، ۱۳۹۲)، کوهسنگی، پلاک ۱۳ ممیز ۱ (هندز مدیا، ۱۳۹۶)، خط سیاه، متروی لندن ( فانوس، ۱۳۹۶) منتشر شده است و مج موعه ی کوی فراموشان زیر چاپ است. کتاب شعر خط سیاه، متروی لندن برنده جایزه شاملو و ترجمه وی از کتاب هنر معاصر آفریقا برنده جایزه کتاب فصلِ ترجمه شدهاست. وی شعر شاعران نامداری نظیر درک والکات، راینر ماریا ریلکه، جک کرواک و شماری دیگر را به فارسی برگردانده و آثار شما ر قابل توجهی از شاعران فارسی زبان را به انگلیسی ترجمه و منتشر کردهاست. اثر پژوهشی وی به زبان انگلیسی با عنوان Censorship of Literature in Post-Revol utionary Iran: Politics and Cult ure Since 1979 ( سانسور ادبیات در ایران پس از انقلاب : سیاست و فرهنگ از سال ۱۹۷۹ به بعد) را انتشارات بلومزبری در سال ۲۰۲۰ و تر جمه گزیدهای از شعرهایش با عنوان The Kindly Interrogator )بازجوی مهربان) را انتشارات شیرزمن در سال ۲۰۲۱ منتشر کردهاست. شعرهای بلند On London Bridge و Desert Monitor از آبیز به ترتیب در نشریهی Asymptote و The Rialto منتشر شدهاند. ترجمه شعرهای او به زبانهای عربی، آلمانی ، انگلیسی، رومانیایی، فر انسوی، ایتالیایی، بنگالی، چک\, ، بوسنیایی و اسلواک در نشریات و آنتالوژیهای متعدد منشر شده و در مکانهای عمومی از جمله مترو اشتوتگارت به نمایش در آمده است. وی در چندین جایزه ادبی بینالمللی داور بوده و از جمله ریاست هیات داور ان جایزه سارا مگگوایر را بر عهده داشتهاست.
علیرضا آبیز در جنوب خراسان به د نیا آمده و در رشته ی زبان و ادبیات انگلیسی در دانشگاه فردوسی مشهد و دانشگا ه تهران تحصیل کرده و از دانشگاه نیوکاسل انگلستان دکترا در رشته ی ادبیات خلا ق – شعر کسب کرده است. آبیز عضو هیأتامنای مرکز ترجمهی شعر در انگلستان است و به کار ترجمه، پژوهش، و تدریس ادبیات خلاق اشتغال دارد.

Dr. Hessa m Dehghani earned his first P hD in Linguistics from Allameh Tabātabāi University\, on the “Structural An alysis and Phenomenological Study of Persian Literature\,” in 2012. He then earned another PhD in Philosophy from Boston College in 2019. Between Augu st 2019 and December 2020\, he was a post-doctoral fellow and associate res earcher at Harvard Divinity School and the Center for Middle Eastern Studie s\, where he focused his research on the formation of Persianate identity i n Persian mystic literature. He has presented on different aspects of Persi an mystic literature regularly at Harvard University and Boston College. His most recent lecture exploring the literary t heory behind the work of Rahnavard-i Zaryab was delivered on June 18\, 2022 as part of the Alireza Ahmadian Lecture Series at the University of British Columbia.< /span>
Besides his research interest s\, he has been teaching English as a foreign language in Iran since 2000\, and Persian and Arabic in North America for the past 8 years. Since 2012\, he has taught Persian and Arabic and has directed the Persian program sing le-handedly at Boston College for which he received a teaching award and wa s nominated for a leadership award from that institution. In 2021\, Dr. Deh ghani started his tenure-track position as an assistant professor of teachi ng Persian language and Culture at the University of British Columbia. In p edagogy\, his interests lie in content-based instruction and critical herit age language education for which he has passed multiple CAL\, ACFTL and STA RTALK workshops and received several certifications from 2013 up to present . He is passionate about implementing technology in teaching Persian. Imple menting the latest findings in critical heritage education and second langu age acquisition\, he and his wife\, Mahtab Sirdani\, devised a new method o f teaching literacy to heritage learners of Persian\, which they call Colla borative Storytelling (CT).
T o promote public humanities\, that is\, the education of humanities to the community of Persianates outside their native land\, since March 2021\, Dr. Dehghani and a team of enthusiastic students of his have started UBC Peris an Literature Reading Club through which they hold weekly literature readin g sessions and monthly lectures in Persian. In these monthly sessions\, acc ompanied by a panel of experts as part of a project titled: “The Oral Histo ry of Modern Persian Literature\,” they interview the most prominent figure s of modern Persian Literature especially the literary figures in migration and exile.

rzan Sojoodi is a retired full profess
or of semiotics and linguistics at the Tehran University of Arts. He obtain
ed his B.A in English Literature\, M.A\, and Ph.D. in Linguistics from Alla
meh Tabataba’i University.
H is primary interests are critical semiotics\, discourse theory\, cultural s emiotics\, and intercultural studies. He has published some books in Persia n\, the most important of which are Applied Semiotics\, Semiotics: Theory and Practice\, and Semiotics and Literature. He has published nearly 100 articles on theoretical issues in cultural semiotics\, intercultural studies\, literature and media\, Persian languag e\, and literature.
He was o ne of the founders of the Tehran Society of Semiotics and Forum for Indo-Iranian Studies [FIIRST]\, and he is a member of the Linguistics Society of Iran.
As an invited professor\, he has taught some course s in post-graduate programs at the University of Tehran\, Tarbiat Modares U niversity\, the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies\, and Elm Int ernational Academy.
