The Literature of Awakening

Throughout history\, the political role of poetics (and a rtistic creation in general) has been a subject of interest for scholars. P lato criticized poets for misleading the public and advocated for their exp ulsion from his ideal republic\, while Aristotle regarded poetics as superi or and more philosophical than historiography\, considering poetry essentia l for examining reality. Literature and art reflect and reproduce the preva iling discourses in a society. Furthermore\, literary and artistic works ca n either reinforce dominant ideologies or challenge them\, opening new hori zons of meaning for various concepts. For example\, literature can serve as a propaganda tool to glorify war\, or it can depict the realities surround ing it\, fostering social awareness.
In the upcoming academic year's series of panels organized by the P ersian Literature Reading Club at the University of British Columbia\, unde r the initiative of Dr. Farzan Sojoodi and Dr. Hessam Dehghani\, we will ex plore the literature of awakening. These panels will feature guest writers and researchers who will examine examples of literary works across various genres\, including poetry\, short stories\, and novels\, that employ a deco nstructive approach to counter dominant discourses. By revealing the intern al cracks or contradictions within the dominant discourse\, these works pav e the way for social awakening.
Each specialized panel will focus on a particular genre—such as poetry\, short stories\, or novels—centered around a specific theme.< /p>

از رو زگاران کهن، نقش سیاسی بوطیقا (آفرینش هنری به طور کلی) مورد توجه اندیشمندان بوده است. افلاطون شاعران را مسئول آموزش ناصواب و گمراهی عامهی مردم میداند و حکم به اخراج آنها از آرمانشهر فرضیاش میدهد در حالیکه ارسطو بوطیقا را برتر و فلسفیتر از تاریخنگاری قلمداد و شعرپردازی را برای مداقه در امور واق ع لازم میداند. ادبیات و هنر گفتمانهای موجود در یک جامعه را بازنمایی و باز تولید میکند. در ضمن، آثار ادبی و هنری گاه در خدمت طبیعیسازی عامه و مسلط ه ستند، و گاه قادرند آنها را به چالش کشیده و افقهای معنایی نوینی را پیش رو ی مفاهیم مختلف بگشایند. به فرض ادبیات هم میتواند ابزار تبلیغاتی برای مقدس جلوه دادن جنگ باشد و هم با به تصویر کشیدن واقعیتهای پیرامون آن، زمینه بیدا ری اجتماعی در این خصوص را فراهم .آورد
در سلسله نشستهای سال جاری تحصیلی در ب اشگاه ادبیات فارسی خوانی دانشگاه بریتیش کلمبیا به ابتکار دکتر فرزان سجودی و دکتر حسام دهقانی سلسله نشستهایی را برگزار خواهیم کرد که به بررسی ادبیات ب یداری میپردازد. در این نشستها با حضور نویسندگان و پژوهشگران مهمان به بررس ی نمونههایی از آثار ادبی در ژانرهای مختلف از جمله شعر، داستان کوتاه و رمان خواهیم پرداخت که با رویکردی واسازانه عملی پاد گفتمانی را در برابر گفتمان م سلط سامان میدهند و بدین ترتیب ترکها یا تناقضات درونی گفتمان غالب را آشکار میکنند تا زمینه بیداری اجتماعی در آن خصوص فراهم آید.
در هر یک از این میزگ ردهای تخصصی، آثاری از یک ژانر مثلا شعر، داستان کوتاه یا رمان، در مورد موضوع ی واحد بررسی خواهد شد.

Hassan Mirabedini studied Persian literature and journalism. He teached literature and litera ry criticism at the University of Zanjan and University of Hafez (shiraz) . He has published extensively on the history and development of modern Pers ian fiction. Mirabedini is a frequent contributor to the Encyclopaedia of L iterature\, the Encyclopaedia of Persian Languages and Literature\, and Enc yclopaedia Iranica\, as well as\, the renowned journals\, such as Bukhara\, andishe pouya\, and Negah-e Now. He has delivered lectures in many nationa l and international literary seminars\, and has served as jury on selection committees of numerous literary awards. He is the author of several books on various aspects of modern Persian fiction\, and trends in modern Persian prose literature\, including: Bio-bibliography of Persian Novelists (1990) and most recently\, A Hundred Years of Fiction Writing in Persia (four vol umes\, 2003).

Dr. Hessam Dehghani earned his first PhD in Linguistics from Allameh Tabātab āi University\, on the “Structural Analysis and Phenomenological Study of P ersian Literature\,” in 2012. He then earned another PhD in Philosophy from Boston College in 2019. Between August 2019 and December 2020\, he was a p ost-doctoral fellow and associate researcher at Harvard Divinity School and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies\, where he focused his research on t he formation of Persianate identity in Persian mystic literature. He has pr esented on different aspects of Persian mystic literature regularly at Harvard University< /span> and Boston College. His most re cent lecture exploring the literary theory behind the work of Rahnavard-i Z aryab was delivered on June 18\, 2022 as part of the Ali reza Ahmadian Lecture Series at the University of British Columbia.
Besides his research interests\, he has been teaching English as a foreign language in Iran since 2000\, and Persian and Arabic in North Ameri ca for the past 8 years. Since 2012\, he has taught Persian and Arabic and has directed the Persian program single-handedly at Boston College for whic h he received a teaching award and was nominated for a leadership award fro m that institution. In 2021\, Dr. Dehghani started his tenure-track positio n as an assistant professor of teaching Persian language and Culture at the University of British Columbia. In pedagogy\, his interests lie in content -based instruction and critical heritage language education for which he ha s passed multiple CAL\, ACFTL and STARTALK workshops and received several c ertifications from 2013 up to present. He is passionate about implementing technology in teaching Persian. Implementing the latest findings in critica l heritage education and second language acquisition\, he and his wife\, Ma htab Sirdani\, devised a new method of teaching literacy to heritage learne rs of Persian\, which they call Collaborative Storytelling (CT).
To promote public humanities\, that is\ , the education of humanities to the community of Persianates outside their native land\, since March 2021\, Dr. Dehghani and a team of enthusiastic s tudents of his have started UBC Perisan Literature Reading Club through whi ch they hold weekly literature reading sessions and monthly lectures in Per sian. In these monthly sessions\, accompanied by a panel of experts as part of a project titled: “The Oral History of Modern Persian Literature\,” the y interview the most prominent figures of modern Persian Literature especia lly the literary figures in migration and exile.
Dr. Farzan Sojoodi is a retired full professor of semiotics and linguistics at the Tehran University of Arts. He obtained his B.A in English Literature\, M.A \, and Ph.D. in Linguistics from Allameh Tabataba’i University.
His primary interests are critical semi otics\, discourse theory\, cultural semiotics\, and intercultural studies. He has published some books in Persian\, the most important of which are Applied Semiotics\, Se miotics: Theory and Practice\, and Semiotics and Literature. He has published nearly 100 artic les on theoretical issues in cultural semiotics\, intercultural studies\, l iterature and media\, Persian language\, and literature.
As an invited professor\, he has taught some courses in post-graduate programs at the Uni versity of Tehran\, Tarbiat Modares University\, the Institute for Humaniti es and Cultural Studies\, and Elm International Academy.
