 in Iranian and Persianate Studies presents: Translating Persian\, Universal
 izing Islam: The Case of Rumi’s “Moses and the Shepherd” on March 8\, 2025.
 </p><p>The tale of Moses and the Shepherd is one of the best-known stories 
 from Rumi’s <i>Masnavi</i>. In this lecture\, Austin O’Malley examines how 
 the episode has been translated and understood in English-speaking environm
 ents\, paying special attention to the ways in which its form and meaning h
 ave been changed to accord with the universalizing religious expectations o
 f the modern era. A close translation of the Persian text\, he suggests\, f
 rustrates this surreptitiously Protestant universalism and thereby makes ou
 r own assumptions visible.</p><h3>Speaker</h3><p><strong>Austin O’Malley</s
 trong> is an assistant professor of Persian literature at the University of
  Chicago. His monograph\, <i>The Poetics of Spiritual Instruction: Farid al
 -Din ʿAttar and Persian Sufi Didacticism</i>\, was published by Edinburgh U
 niversity Press in 2023. <i> </i></p><h3>Discussant</h3><p><strong>Francesc
 a Chubb-Confer</strong>'s research takes an interdisciplinary approach to t
 he fields of religious studies and comparative literature to advance the st
 udy of Islamic literary and poetic traditions\, particularly in South Asia 
 and the Persianate world. With interests in Sufism\, poetry\, religion and 
 colonialism\, and translation\, her current book project focuses on Muhamma
 d Iqbal\, the early 20th-century reformer\, philosopher\, and poet\, and an
 alyzes how the relationship between form and content in his work navigates 
 between classical Islamic tradition and the demands of colonial modernity. 
 Francesca's published work has appeared in the International Journal of Isl
 am in Asia\; Comparative Studies of South Asia\, Africa\, and the Middle Ea

 sianate Studies: Alireza Ahmadian (1981 – 2019) was an enthusiastic researc
 her\, a consummate socio-political analyst\, and an opinion leader on forei
 gn policy who nurtured the virtues of diplomatic dialogue and liberal democ
 racy. Alireza was a proud and devoted UBC alumnus\, supporter of UBC’s Depa
 rtment of Asian Studies\, and beloved member of Canadian-Iranian Community.
  The department renamed this lecture series in his honour in 2019. Alireza’
 s friends in the community have provided funding to support this series\, a
 nd this generous gift will see these important academic and community engag
 ement events supported through to the end of the 2025/2026 academic year. <
