  K. Sunar at VIFF's Pantheon series as they introduce the classic 1955 Saty
 ajit Ray film "Pather Panchali\," hailed as one of the greatest films ever 
 made.</p><p>A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italia
 n neorealism\, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years 
 in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and\, just as esse
 ntially\, the women who will help shape him: his independent older sister\,
  Durga\; his harried mother\, Sarbajaya\, who\, with her husband away\, mus
 t hold the family together\; and his kindly and mischievous elderly “auntie
 \,” Indir—vivid\, multifaceted characters all.</p><p>Pantheon is a monthly 
 series showcasing a selection of the “greatest movies of all time”\, inspir
 ed by the mother of all film lists\, the critics’ poll that has run once a 
 decade in the UK’s Sight & Sound magazine since 1952.</p><p>Sunday’s Panthe
 on screening will be preceded by a 15 minute introductory lecture and featu
