Cantonese Language Program Event Recap – UBC Cantonese Speech Contest 2021
As a part of celebrations for the fifth anniversary of the Cantonese Language Program, the UBC Cantonese Speech Contest was held on March 24, 2021 via Zoom. The contest was open to students currently taking CNTO courses, many of whom had been learning Cantonese for just three months.

The Chinese Language Program recently hosted the Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies (UCCS) on Canvas from December 3rd to 24th. The conference invited young scholars to present new research, engage in discussions, and help build a scholastic community in China-related disciplines.
“The Voices of Our Community” CLP Singing Contest 2020
The Chinese Language Program held a singing contest in December to celebrate the end of 2020 and welcome the new year. Each Chinese language course was able to participate and language students from various backgrounds all came together to spread joy through song during the holiday season.
UBC Tianzhu-Hurvitz Lecture Series: Karma in Chinese Buddhist Historiography Lecture Report and Video
The second iteration of the UBC Tianzhu-Hurvitz Lecture Series was held on October 9, with speaker Dr. John Kieschnick (Stanford University) exploring why Chinese Buddhist historians turned to the doctrine of karma for explanation of historical causation and truths.
