さくぶんコンテスト


The UBC Japanese Language Program is holding the annual writing contest for all students enrolled in the 2025/26 Winter Terms. Students who have previously taken Japanese courses are also welcome to join the contest! The objectives of the competition are to inspire creativity through writing in a newly learned language and to provide students with opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and modes of expression.
Guidelines
Eligibility
Open to UBC students who
- are enrolled in JAPN courses in the 2025-2026 Winter Terms
- took JAPN courses in the past
Application
There are three categories to enter.
| Category | Level | Characters |
| Junior 100 | JAPN 100s | 300-400 |
| Junior 200 | JAPN 200s | 500-600 |
| Senior | JAPN 300s and 400s | 900-1000 |
- Format: A story related to the theme — either fiction or non-fiction.
- Theme: 旅/旅行(たび/りょこう— Please give your own title.
- Entries must be created using the template (available in the entry form), saved as a single pdf document, and submitted HERE
- Entries must be typed in MS Mincho, 12pt font, please include your full name in Japanese and English.
- Length and Content:
- Must not exceed the maximum number of characters of your category
- Must not include tables, photos, pictures, etc.
- Punctuation marks are counted as characters
- The title, name, and other information at the top of the template will not be counted
- The entry must be your original work (Entries generated by AI are not eligible.)
- Entries will be judged on originality, clear expression of ideas and effective use of language.
- Winners will be announced in January 2026.
- Winning works will be used as reading materials for the UBC Japanese Language Program Tadoku (Extensive Reading) Club. Authors may be contacted for possible revisions in Japanese and the addition of photos or illustrations. Selected works may also be published on the UBC Department of Asian Studies website with authors’ consent.
Prizes
Certificates and gift cards will be awarded to the first-place winners in each category.
