Department of Asian Studies at the 38th Japan Studies Association of Canada Annual Meeting



The Department of Asian Studies had a strong showing at the 38th Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) annual meeting, held at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, October 2-5. A panel, “The Tale of Genji in The Treasure Box of the Greater Learning for Women,” organized by Dr. Joshua Mostow and chaired by Department Head Dr. Sharalyn Orbaugh, included presentations by graduate students Sydney Olney and Saeko Suzuki.

Sydney won the Klaus Pringsheim Award for best presentation by an MA student, while Saeko shared the PhD prize with a Lethbridge student. PhD student Haruki Sekiguchi and Hina Kangori (Anthropology) also presented in the panel “Developments in Film, Anime, and Music”; UBC faculty presenters also included Dr. Millie Creighton and Dr. Shigenori Matsui.

A large group of Asian Studies alumni also presented: Jeffrey Newmark (PhD 2009, now at University of Winnipeg), Yuki Ohsawa (PhD 2016, now at Otaru University of Commerce), Ben Whaley (PhD 2016, now at University of Calgary), and Eiji Okawa (PhD 2016, now at University of the Fraser Valley).

The entire conference was co-organized by Asian Studies alumnus, Gideon Fujiwara (PhD 2013, now at University of Lethbridge).
