Congratulations to Dr. Colleen Laird, Assistant Professor of Japanese Film, for receiving a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant for her international research initiative, Videographic Venice.
SSHRC Partnership Development Grants support the development of partnered research and related activities in the social sciences and humanities.
Running from 2026–2028, Videographic Venice: Media, Spaces, and Ecologies establishes a new international hub for videographic criticism at Venice International University (VIU), led by UBC in partnership with scholars from around the world. Through three fully funded, week-long summer workshops in Venice, participants will receive mentorship from leading experts while producing original video essays that explore the city’s cultural and ecological fragilities.
Dr. Laird is joined on the project by Drs. Barbara Zecchi (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Alan O’Leary (Aarhus University), Johannes Binotto (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts), and Danielle Hipkins (University of Exeter). Over three years, the project will train 36 participants, with a particular focus on graduate students and early-career researchers.
