From classroom speeches to live TV broadcasts, UBC alumna Sophia Qianye Yin’s recent crowning as Miss Chinese Vancouver 2025 is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of language learning. Originally from Sichuan, China, Sophia took her first UBC Cantonese course CNTO 311 Basic Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers in 2021. This decision marked the beginning of an inspiring journey driven by intrinsic motivation, cultural appreciation, and linguistic immersion.
For those unfamiliar with Vancouver’s vibrant diaspora media, the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant is an annual event organized by Fairchild TV, the region’s premier Cantonese-language broadcaster. The pageant has long served as a vital incubator for talent within the global Cantonese media and entertainment industry. Competing on such a high-profile platform in a non-native language is an extraordinary feat—one that demands not only composure under pressure, but an exceptional command of public speaking in a second language.
Sophia’s path to mastering Cantonese did not happen overnight; it was meticulously cultivated through her active involvement with the UBC Cantonese Language Program. Rather than viewing language merely as an academic subject, she treated it as a living vehicle for connection. Her dedication bore early fruit in the UBC Cantonese Speech Contest in 2021, where her expressiveness earned her the Audience Choice Award. After excelling in multiple upper-level Cantonese courses, she was selected to serve as a teaching assistant, using her passion for everyday Cantonese to inspire fellow learners to speak with courage. Building on this momentum, Sophia volunteered as a Master of Ceremonies for the UBC Cantonese Fun Night in 2022. Her wit and grace captivated the audience, demonstrating the eloquence and poise that would ultimately carry her into the spotlight.

Sophia won the Audience Choice Award in the UBC Cantonese Speech Contest in 2021 with her speech titled “Why should we learn Cantonese?”
These extracurricular experiences served as invaluable stepping stones. Host duties and speech contests allowed Sophia to move beyond basic conversation, instilling an unshakeable confidence in her ability to articulate ideas in Cantonese before large crowds. That foundational practice directly prepared her for the high-stakes environment of live television broadcasting. As Sophia begins her graduate studies in Hong Kong, we have no doubt she will continue to thrive in every future endeavour.
Sophia Yin’s success underscores a core principle of the UBC Cantonese Language Program: language learning is an empowering tool that opens doors to community engagement, self-discovery, and unexpected opportunities. Her achievement proves that mastering a new language is far more than an academic milestone—it is a bridge to finding one’s voice on any stage.
