Ranbir Johal is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Asian Studies working under the guidance of Dr. Anne Murphy. Ranbir received her MA from the same department focusing on the representation of gender in early Punjabi literature, specifically Bhai Bala Janamsakhi. Her PhD research is funded by a SSHRC grant and focusses on the roles women play in Punjabi Theatre, with particular reference to affect theory and ideas of caste and class. Ranbir’s broader interests include the Punjabi Diaspora, Punjabi Language and Literature and Women and Performance in South Asia. She also teaches courses in Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. In addition, she is co-director of a Punjabi Theatre Company (Rangmanch Punjabi Theatre) and a creative writer in Punjabi and English.
