Term 1

Course description:

A survey of the birth and growth of the civilizations of East, Southeast, and South Asia from the stone age to the 16th century. The course will focus on interactions across cultures within Asia as well as developments within specific cultural zones, including how gender roles changed over the centuries.

Term 2
Tue Thu, 11:00 - 12:30

Course description:

A survey of the political, cultural, economic, and social history of East, Southeast, and South Asia since 1600, with an emphasis on explaining the rise of modern nation-states, industrial economies, and democracies. Cultural changes, including changes in gender roles, over the last four centuries will also be examined and explained.
