An authority on the earliest forms of Chinese writing, the so-called oracle-bone inscriptions of the Shang dynasty (late second millennium B.C.), he is now concentrating on the study of bronze incriptions of the Western Zhou dynasty (eleventh to eighth centuries B.C.), tracing the evolution of early Chinese civilization as reflected in texts written in early scripts.
