UBC has transitioned to Workday Student for the 2024 Winter Session. The Asian Studies waitlist policy is changing as a result. The new policy applies to all courses offered by Asian Studies from the 2024 Winter session and onwards.
All courses offered by Asian Studies will have waitlists enabled. Once a course section is full, students registering will automatically be placed on the waitlist.
Waitlists work on a first come, first serve basis, unless otherwise specified. If a seat becomes available in the course section, you will receive a notification in Workday that gives you 24 hours to accept or drop the seat. If you do not respond within 24 hours, the seat will automatically be given to the next person in line.

The following policy applies to courses in the 2024 Summer Session (May – August 2024) only.
Any course that is full will be blocked and have an open waitlist. Students should sign up for the waitlist section of the course if it is full.
- After registration begins for a session, any course that is full will be blocked and have an open waitlist. Register for the waitlist if the course you want to take is blocked.
- Open seats are assigned to waitlisted students in the following order:
- Honours/Majors in Asian Studies, 4th to 1st year, by registration date
- Minors in Asian Studies, 4th to 1st year, by registration date
- All other students, by registration date
- Students are assigned into the course manually, at least twice a week
- Waitlists stop being monitored on the last Wednesday before each term begins. The department will unblock all course sections starting that term (unless otherwise requested by the instructor). Students will be responsible for monitoring the course sections on their own for an available spot.
Courses starting in Term 1 of the 2024 Summer session will stop having waitlists monitored from May 8, 2024. Courses starting in Term 2 of the 2024 Summer session will stop having waitlists monitored from June 26, 2024.
