Congratulations to Dr. Stefania Burk for Being Appointed as Associate Dean, Academic!

Stefania BurkWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Stefania Burk has been appointed to serve a five-year term as Associate Dean, Academic in the Faculty of Arts starting in July 2015!

Dr.  Stefania  Burk  is  a  Senior  Instructor  in  the  Department  of  Asian  Studies,  where  she  previously  held  an  Assistant  Professor  appointment  for  five  years.  Despite  her  very  successful  research  trajectory, it  was  at  Dr. Burk’s request, with endorsement from the Department, that her appointment was switched to the educational leadership stream. Her area of expertise is in Medieval Japanese Literature, Culture and Society, with research interests that include Japanese poetry, medieval culture, and women’s writing.  Her current projects deal with 14th century poetry and related aspects of cultural production, poetry as autobiography, and canon formation. Dr. Burk has taught a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Asian Studies and served as the Associate Graduate Advisor in the Department.  In addition, during her first two years at UBC she taught in the Arts One Program,  which  provides  first-‐year  students  with  a  year-‐long  team-‐taught  integrated,  interdisciplinary  curriculum in a small cohort learning environment.  During the 2014/15 academic year, Dr. Burk completed the UBC Faculty SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) Leadership Program: UBC Certificate on Curriculum & Pedagogy  in  Higher  Education.  Dr.  Burk’s  excellent  record  of  teaching,  her  engagement  with  students  at  all  levels,  and  her  leadership  on  new  course  development,  curriculum renewal  initiatives,  and  academic  integrity issues—together  with  her  faculty  experience  of  both  the research  stream  and  the  educational  leadership  stream—make her an exceptional candidate for the role of Associate Dean, Academic.
