Congratulations to Kyoko Kobayashi Hillman on her Ph.D!

We congratulate Kyoko Kobayashi Hillman in our Japanese faculty, who has just successfully submitted and defended her Ph.D thesis within the University of Maryland!

The title of Kyoko’s thesis is “Effects of Different Types of Auditory Input on Incidental Vocabulary Learning by L2 Japanese Speakers.” She investigated how different types of spoken input enhance listening comprehension and incidental vocabulary learning (i.e. picking up new words when watching a foreign film). The study revisited input modification research in the field of Second Language Acquisition from the 1990s while using the latest study methodologies, such as working memory measures. Her results will be useful for developing teaching materials that provide students with richer contextual information in listening and reading.
