The Persian Language and Iranian Studies Initiative at UBC, the UBC Persian Literature Reading Club, and the UBC Persian Club are hosting a series of events analyzing the literature of migration and exile in Modern Persian Literature in Spring 2022. The second session of the Spring 2022 series features guest speaker Sorour Kasmaï who will delve into the linguistic challenges every author wrestles with in composing a work, the strategies they deploy, and decisions they have to make. The sessions are designed and run by Bahram Moradi, Hessam Dehghani and Fariba Seddighim.

در این جلسه با میهمانان درباره‌ی چالش‌های زبانی در ادبیات مهاجرت گفتگو می‌کنیم. چه مسایل و مولفه‌هایی را نویسنده در انتخاب زبان در نظر می‌گیرد و نسبت ادبیات مهاجرت با زبان مادری چیست؟
Guest speaker
Sorour Kasmaï is a novelist, translator and publisher who was born in Teheran in a Francophile family. She attended primary and secondary school at the franco-iranian Lycée Razi. She later studied Russian language and literature in Paris. In 1987, thanks to a university scholarship, she went to Moscow and studied Russian theater. Passionate about theater, she became, a few years later, a translator and interpreter of Russian on stage and at the Paris Opera. At the same time, she worked on Tajik oral literature and published a series of CDs of folk and traditional music from Tajikistan, as well as popular and traditional Iranian music (Shadjarian, Sima Bina, etc.). In 2002, her first novel, The Glass Cemetery, was published by Actes Sud. She also founded and directed at the same publisher, the collection “Horizons Persans” (Persian Horizons) dedicated to Iranian and Afghan literatures. Since then, she has published The Valley of the Eagles, the autobiography of an escape (Adelf Award 2007) and A Day Before the End of the World. She also translated into French several novels and short stories from her compatriots, including My Uncle Napoleon by Iraj Pezechkzad and Leaving, Staying, Returning by Shahrokh Meskoob.
