Tommy is a MA student in the Department of Asian Studies at UBC working with Dr Helena Wu. He specialises in Hong Kong popular culture with a focus in stand-up comedy. His MA thesis attempts to examine the transformation of Hongkongers’ political anxiety reflected off Dayo Wong Tze-Wah’s stand-up comedy from 1990 to 2018. His research interests range from humour studies to cultural history. He is recently also exploring post-war food histories of East Asian cultures including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Prior to UBC, Tommy completed a BA (1st-class honours) with a major in Hong Kong Studies, a major in German, and a minor in Japanese Cultures from the University of Hong Kong. He has worked as a research assistant in the Department of History at the Hong Kong Baptist University for two years. He is now a teaching assistant for the Ritsumeikan-UBC Programme at UBC.
