Welcome to the new academic year! Whether you are new to UBC or are returning students, join us for the Asian Studies Welcome Back Night on September 12!
The event is a great opportunity to learn about the Asian Studies experience and join the Asian Studies community. Check out our Asian language program booths to try out various traditional instruments, play cultural games, and test your Asian language knowledge! This is your chance to network with peers, chat with faculty and staff, and learn more about what the Department of Asian Studies has to offer. You will also have a chance to win raffle prizes (Asian Studies Merchandise)!

Language Program Booths
Here’s a sneak peek at what our language program booths have to offer!
Come learn more about the program and chat with instructors.
- Arabic: Get a preview of our new language program by learning to write your name in Arabic!
- Chinese: Join a spinning game and learn some basic Chinese characters and phrases!
- Cantonese: Use your strategy skills in mahjong and test your knowledge with some trivia.
- Japanese: Test your hand-eye coordination by playing with the Kendama or your musical talent by playing the Mukkur, a traditional Ainu instrument.
- Korean: Try on a Hanbok, Korean traditional clothing, or see if you would end up in Squid Game by playing Ddakji, a traditional Korean game.
- Hindi-Urdu: Take home a beautiful traditional henna tattoo by visiting this booth!
- Punjabi: Listen to and create some Punjabi music by trying out different instruments available!
- Tibetan: Grow your creative skills by practicing Tibetan calligraphy here at this booth.
