The Indigenous Asia Initiative Steering Committee, Department of Asian Studies at UBC invites you to the screening of Chakma language film “Mo Thenggari” (My Bicycle). The film was produced by Indigenous director Aung Rakhaine in 2015. It was banned by the censorship board in Bangladesh until 2024. In light of the recent tragic incidents in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Indigenous activists and researchers Muktasree Chakma and Dinalo Chakma will share their remarks followed by Q&A after the screening.
The film depicts the socio-economic condition of the Chakma people in a village. It shows how the main character, Kamal, bringing a bicycle to the village complicates his relationship with the villagers. By illustrating the complicated relationships revolving around the bicycle, the film shows how modernity has complicated impacts on the lives of Indigenous people.
