On Oct 25 a symposium with the theme “Voices of Kakehashi in Multicultural Canada: Transcultural and Intercultural Experiences” was held in the Asian Centre.

Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton are the translators of numerous volumes of modern Korean fiction, including the award-winning women’s anthology, Words of Farewell: Stories by Korean Women Writers (Seal Press, 1989), and with Marshall R. Pihl, Land of Exile: Contemporary Korean Fiction, rev. and exp. ed. (M.E. Sharpe, 2007).

Kabuki actor Gankyō Nakamura performed selections from the play Maiden at Dōjōji Temple (Musume Dōjōji) at the Frederic Wood Theatre on October 22.

Today we asked Dr. Anne Murphy, Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Studies, about the recent appointment of the Honourable Harjit Singh Sajjan as Canada’s Defense Minister. Dr. Murphy’s research interests focus on early modern and modern cultural representation in Punjab and within the Punjabi Diaspora, as well as more broadly in South Asia, with particular attention to the historical formation of religious communities and special but not exclusive attention to the Sikh tradition.

On October 8, more than fifty scholars from across the university, as well as members of the community beyond UBC, gathered to celebrate Dr. Joshua Mostow’s election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
