Recently our annual Careers Night was held at Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre. Joined by 11 Asian Studies alumni coming from diverse career backgrounds, students had the opportunity to make connections with others who share similar interests, and seek career advice. You can watch our video recap above, and check out some event photos here – all photos and video footage taken by Colby Brochu, and video editing by Yuchun Wu (Connie).

The night kicked off with a warm welcome by Department Head, Dr. Ross King, followed by a brand-new feature presentation by Juliana De Souza (Career Strategist, Arts from Centre for Student Involvement and Careers) on both her own UBC career experience and with additional career opportunities on campus. She also mentioned that UBC’s WorkLearn and Co-op programs are great student opportunities (which was supported by our MC and current Asian Studies WorkLearn student Mason!).

The major highlight was the “round robin” speed networking session. With one alumni guest seated at each table, during four rounds, students had the chance to swap tables at selected times to speak with whoever they would like. “Alumni were very informative and helpful in giving advice and guidance on their fields and their careers”, one student told the staff.

As it was held for the second time at the Alumni Centre after a very successful 2019 event, once again a free, delicious buffet dinner by Loafe Catering was served (with takeaway boxes even provided for those wanting extras to take home!). The event ended with raffle prize draws and 6 lucky students won some Asian Studies merch, such as barrel mugs and tote bags.

The 2020 Annual Asian Studies Careers Night provided opportunities for students to mingle and connect with alumni who have been through the same degree, and now well into their career paths. We would like to thank all guests, staff and volunteers, whose joint efforts made the event a great success again.

We’ll see you in 2021!
