A Celebration of Dedication: Honoring the 2025 Student Employees and Volunteers of the Chinese Language Program

On March 22, the Chinese Language Program (CLP) hosted its annual Student Employee Appreciation Event at the Asian Centre Auditorium. This was a heartwarming occasion to recognize the extraordinary contributions of our Teaching Assistants, Work Learns, and Volunteers (TAWLV). This event celebrated their crucial role in not only helping students achieve excellence in language, but also in fostering intercultural understanding. Through a variety of engaging activities, heartfelt speeches, and a memorable awards ceremony, we celebrated the incredible efforts of our TAWLVs who make the CLP community thrive.

The day began with an enthusiastic opening from the CLP team, setting the tone for a celebration filled with gratitude. Attendees were invited to reflect on the pivotal role TAWLVs play throughout the academic year to support students in their Mandarin language journey. The event was structured to showcase the diverse contributions of TAWLVs, with multiple interactive segments that allowed attendees to share their experiences and appreciate one another.

Heartwarming appreciation messages from TAWLVs to each other

Student and TAWLV Padlet & Videos:

One of the standout moments of the event was the Student and TAWLV Padlets, where both students and TAWLVs had the opportunity to share their personal experiences and reflections. These Padlet messages were filled with heartfelt quotes and stories that offered a glimpse into the meaningful relationships built over the course of the year. They highlighted how TAWLVs have played an essential role not just in supporting students’ language development, but also in inspiring personal growth and fostering a deeper understanding of language and culture. The stories shared were a powerful reminder of the lasting impact TAWLVs have on both their students and the community as a whole.

Equally inspiring were the Laoshi Padlets, where our dedicated instructors took the time to reflect on the hard work and commitment shown by the TAWLVs. Faculty members shared heartfelt messages and videos, expressing their deep appreciation for the TAWLVs’ contributions throughout the year. Many of these reflections emphasized the crucial role teamwork plays in creating a positive and successful learning environment. By working together, TAWLVs and instructors have been able to build a supportive community that nurtures student growth to foster a collective appreciation for language and cross-cultural understanding.

Recognition of Graduating TAWLVs & Awards Ceremony:

One of the most heartfelt and memorable moments of the event was the Recognition of Graduating TAWLVs. This was our chance to celebrate those who are moving on to exciting new chapters after years of dedicated service to the Chinese Language Program. These graduating TAWLVs have left a meaningful legacy in the way they’ve all helped shape the inclusive and welcoming spirit of the CLP.

Throughout their time with us, many TAWLVs have led oral practice tutorials, offered guidance to students during office hours, and played key roles in organizing CLP’s many annual events. More than that, they’ve built strong relationships with both students and faculty, becoming trusted mentors and valued members of the CLP community. Their passion for teaching, enthusiasm for language learning, and commitment to creating a welcoming environment have made a lasting impact. As they move forward in their personal and professional journeys, we want to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation and to say we are very proud to have had them as part of our team.

Spotlight on TAWLVs:

Behind every successful language class and event in the Chinese Language Program is a dedicated group of student Teaching Assistants and Work Learns who bring empathy and excellence to their roles. This year, we’re very proud to shine a spotlight on several outstanding TAWLVs whose contributions have shaped the CLP community and have made a lasting impact on students and instructors alike.

“My journey with the CLP began as a volunteer, and it was that experience that sparked my interest in becoming a TA and Work Learn Assistant. As someone who knows how rewarding and challenging it can be to learn a new language, I wanted to help create a space where students feel supported and motivated to improve. Becoming a coordinator taught me how meaningful it is to repay the trust instructors place in us. That sense of responsibility pushes me to always give my best and has given me a real sense of accomplishment.”
4th Year, Arts Interdisciplinary Studies — Volunteer Coordinator

“What drew me to the CLP initially was its warm, supportive atmosphere and what I’ve experienced here exceeded every expectation. I’ve gained practical skills like presenting professionally, coordinating with teams, and building meaningful relationships with mentors and peers. My time here helped me grow tremendously in leadership, time management, and public speaking. I learned how to thrive under pressure and face challenges with resilience—in other words, how to dance in the rain. I’m truly grateful for this incredible experience.”
3rd Year, Economics — TAWL Coordinator

“I became a TAWL, and later OP Coordinator, because I wanted to challenge myself and step outside my comfort zone. At first, it was overwhelming to serve as a communication bridge between students, facilitators, and instructors, but over time, I learned to trust my team and myself. I gained confidence in managing unexpected situations and speaking up when needed. This role has taught me to lead with empathy, stay calm under pressure, and truly believe in my own abilities.”
4th Year, Economics — Tutorial Coordinator

“I decided to volunteer with the CLP because I plan to pursue a career in education, and I saw this as a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience. I also wanted to connect more deeply with the CLP community. Volunteering has been incredibly rewarding—it’s amazing to see students improve week by week and to know I played a role in their learning journey. I’ve really enjoyed my time as a volunteer and look forward to doing it again next year!”
4th Year, Asian Studies – China and French Language, Literatures, and Cultures — Oral Practice Volunteer
