Imagine Day at UBC is a celebration of excitement and discovery, where new and returning students embark on a journey filled with endless possibilities for the academic year. This year, the Chinese Language Program (CLP) participated actively, encouraging students to ‘dream big’ and envision their unique paths forward at UBC. Through engaging activities, the CLP helped create an environment that fostered new friendships, sparked curiosity, and encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones.
Imagine Day transcends a typical orientation—it’s a celebration of UBC’s vibrant and diverse community. Students wandered among hundreds of booths from various departments and clubs, with the CLP booth emerging as a lively center of activity and engagement. Here, students participated in interactive games, winning small prizes while discovering fun facts about Chinese language and culture. Instructors and volunteers were on hand to share insights about the Chinese Language Program and welcomed students to join this dynamic community.
A highlight of the day was the “Chinese Cuisine Matching Game,” which challenged students to match popular dishes like Peking Duck from Beijing, Mapo Tofu from Sichuan, and Lanzhou Beef Noodles from Gansu with their provinces of origin. As they tested their knowledge, students learned fascinating stories behind each dish, from the spicy roots of Sichuan cuisine to the tea culture of Cantonese dim sum.
Participants were both surprised and delighted as they uncovered the connections between the cuisine and China’s cultural and geographical diversity, sparking lively discussions and piquing curiosity. Many shared personal anecdotes related to these dishes, adding a rich layer of communal learning. This game provided a fun and engaging way to explore the cultural significance of food and highlighted the rich educational opportunities available through the Chinese Language Program.
The activities organized by the CLP went beyond mere entertainment; they were a true reflection of the program’s mission to cultivate a supportive and inclusive community. Imagine Day served as an ideal venue for the CLP to engage with a wider audience, showcasing its dedication to nurturing meaningful relationships among students. It offered a welcoming environment that inspired and encouraged everyone to learn. For many students, this event marked the beginning of an academic journey rich with opportunities for personal growth and discovery.
In ‘Their Own Words,’ we asked students visiting our booth how they felt about learning Chinese and their overall experience at Imagine Day:
“I visited the CLP booth because I’m interested in taking Mandarin classes this year and come from a Cantonese speaking family. The community here seems very welcoming, and I’m excited to join!”
— Emma Chen, 1st Year Arts student
“I enjoyed playing the matching Chinese dish to the province game because I have eaten or seen some of the dishes at restaurants before, but I never knew where they actually came from! It made me appreciate the depth and diversity of Chinese cuisine even more.”
— Alex Li, 2nd Year Science student
“As a returning student, Imagine Day is always such a great way to connect with new people and explore what UBC has to offer. The CLP booth was a highlight for me because it showed that there’s much more to learning Chinese culture than just taking class.”
— James Stewart, 3rd Year Arts student
We also spoke with Sessional Lecturer Hongyang Tao, asking for her reflections on the energy and impact of Imagine Day:
Q: What makes Imagine Day at UBC special to you?
A: Imagine Day is a magical land and a whirlwind of energy! It brings together students, professors, and staff to celebrate knowledge and aspirations. It’s a day where students can mingle with enthusiastic faculty and visit vibrant booths showcasing the wide array of programs available. For me, it’s all about the anticipation and excitement in the air. Imagine Day is a fantastic opportunity for students to envision their futures, take charge of their education, and connect with like-minded peers and supportive professors!
Q: What has your experience been like as a sessional instructor at the CLP?
A: I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Chinese Language Program community! It has truly been one of the highlights of my teaching journey. Our students are incredibly eager to learn and bring their unique perspectives and backgrounds to each class, creating a rich tapestry of ideas and experiences. It’s amazing to witness their growth as they tackle the intricacies of the Chinese language and embrace both its challenges and beauty. The bonds formed and friendships made within the class are cherished lifelong memories for both students and myself.
