Event Recap: the first UBC Cantonese Singing Contest



2018 Cantonese Singing Contest

With a packed AMS Nest Lower Atrium, the historic inaugural UBC Cantonese Singing Contest was successfully held on March 9, 2018. The event began with a welcome message from President Santa Ono as well as Dr. Duanduan Li, the Associate Head of the Department of Asian Studies. The competition had three categories, Cantonese as First Language Solo, Cantonese as an Additional Language Solo, and Group. 18 finalists sang their hearts out in performances of extremely high calibre. Two mini documentaries specially made for the event on the Chinatown Saturday Cantonese School and the UBC Cantonese Language Program were also screened. The audience were then treated with entertaining guest performances by student groups and even teachers of the Mandarin Chinese Program. After a speech by UBC Ambassador Wendy Yip, the final results were announced as follow: 

Solo – Cantonese as First Language:

First Place: Audrey Lo 盧睿敏
Second Place: Olivia Ou 區韻儀
Third Place: Michelle Law 羅紫婷

Solo – Cantonese as an Additional Language:

First Place: Denny Lee 李健麒
Second Place: Mandy Zhu 朱怡潔
Third Place: Ernest Tse 謝天睿
