South Asia — encompassing the nation-states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh — contains the largest Muslim population of any region of the world. Emphasizing the diversity of the Muslim experience in South Asia, this course examines how this population came into existence and developed over time. In this course,we will explore a number of areas, including how South Asian Muslims interacted with Hindus; the development of traditions like Sufism and Shi’ism in the region; the regional and linguistic multiplicity of South Asian Islam; and the development of Islamic modernism and Muslim nationalism in modern times.
