Panelists: Adheesh Sathaye, Asian Studies, UBC; Jessica Main, Asian Studies, UBC; Sam Hamill, poet and founder of Copper Canyon Press and Poets Against War
Date: 5-6:30 pm, Wednesday, November 7, 2012
Location: Coach House, Green College, UBC (6201 Cecil Green Park Road)Description: Sathaye and Main explore the role ancient Buddhist literature plays in illustrating Buddhist ethics. Hamill speaks about how Buddhism influences his poetry and political activities, and reads from his work. The panelists will reflect on how writers, both contemporary and in the past, interpret Buddhist philosophical concepts in their work and how writers grappled, and continue to grapple, with the contradictions and grey areas and complications in Buddhist ethics. What, also, are the political dimensions of Buddhist narrative and poetry? How have they played out in the past and in the present?
