The Asian Centre Auditorium buzzed with excitement as the popular Hong Kong band, The Hertz, visited the UBC campus from Hong Kong in the evening of October 15, 2023. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation, as students and music enthusiasts from the Cantonese-speaking community alike gathered to meet the young group of talented musicians to learn from their personal stories and the inspiration behind their music works and videos.
The Hertz, formed in late 2018 in Hong Kong, is a band that combines the everyday reality with music. They are dedicated to expressing their beliefs and social values by turning their ideas into the basic unit of frequency and the universal language of music.
The Hertz members, Herman Wong (vocalist and guitarist), Marco Leung (percussionist), Him Hui (keyboardist), Ray Sze (bassist), and Ricky Wu (guitarist) were in the middle of their Canadian tour in Kelowna, Vancouver, and Toronto when they visited UBC campus. In this visit, they shared their musical journeys and their inspiration from Cantonese songwriting and music video production. Throughout the night, The Hertz engaged with the audience, expressing their gratitude for the warm welcome they received. Afterwards, students and fans were able to chat and take photos with the band members.
We greatly thank The Hertz and their sponsorship program, Ear Up Music, for making the event possible. The event celebrated cultural exchange and musical diversity for the UBC Cantonese community. The Hertz brought a taste of Hong Kong’s vibrant Cantopop music scene to UBC, leaving a dynamic mark to everyone in attendance.
