Continuing on from Term 1, and for the health and safety of all of us, all courses within the Department of Asian Studies (both undergraduate and graduate) will be offered online in Term 2 for Winter 2020.

Instructors are currently adapting course content and determining the best delivery model for each course. Students can expect a variety of formats which may include a combination of online meetings and outside of class readings, recorded lecturers, and/or assignments, in various proportions. These details will be posted in the individual course notes in the online schedule as they become available.
Please note that additional evening course sections as well as some fully-asynchronous online sections have recently been added to the department’s course offerings, where possible, in order to offer as wide a variety of course times as possible to assist students living in different time zones.
2020W Term 2 Japanese Language Program Course Schedule and Delivery Mode
Information regarding Japanese Language Program course delivery mode:
For courses that will be delivered in a mixed-mode format (3 hrs synchronous + 1 hr, or 2 hrs. synchronous + 2 hrs. asynchronous, or 1.5 hrs. synchronous + 1.5 hrs. asynchronous, etc.), students are expected to meet with the instructor synchronously online for the sessions at the above listed days and times. In addition to the synchronous meetings, the remaining course materials will be delivered asynchronously, as outlined on the course syllabus, and students are expected to complete on their own time. The total workload for these courses (either 3-credit or 6 credits courses) remains the same as a normal class that is delivered in-person.
For DE courses or 100% asynchronous course will be delivered entirely asynchronously. Students are expected to complete the course work and/or pre-recorded lectures according to the weekly class schedule on their own time. The total workload for this 3-credit course remains the same as a normal class that is delivered in-person.
Additional information regarding use of webcam in JAPN courses
As students will learn skills and strategies for communicating with other people in the JAPN courses, the program strongly recommends that students turn their cameras on during synchronous class meetings. As well, for pair work and group work time and for other class activity participation, for optimal engagement and interaction with peers and/or instructors, students are required to turn their cameras on. In case you have concerns about privacy or have encountered any technical issues, please talk to your instructor directly.
