Vancouver, BC – China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG) presents the Canadian premiere of the exquisite visual feast Opera Warriors, January 5 & 6 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Presented as part of the cultural exchange program Image China, which introduces China’s traditional culture and contemporary award-winning art works to the world, Opera Warriors is an epic tale of power, passion, and the Peking Opera told through a mix of contemporary dance, acrobatic feats, and martial arts.
SPECIAL ON SALE OFFER: Enjoy 25% off tickets in sections A+ through C until November 30 only! Use discount code “UBC” to get $20 tickets through Ticketmaster.
Set in northern China in the tumultuous early years of the 20th century, Opera Warriors follows the fates of three exceptionally gifted Peking Opera performers who study under the same martial arts master. After completing their rigorous training, the three artists join a theatrical troupe and seem destined for success, but love and jealousy intervene.
Overflowing with emotion, extravagance and an abundance of talent, the large-scale spectacle brings together an all-star creative team including: choreographer Xing Shimiao; playwright Pik Wah Li, one of Hong Kong’s most popular columnists whose screenplay Farewell My Concubine won the Golden Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival; lighting design by Sha Xiaolan, one of China’s leading designers who worked on the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics; with an original score composed by Fang Ming.
Prior to the performance each evening, a pre-show chat will take place from 7pm to 730pm in the east wing of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre lobby, moderated by a UBC Professor from the department of Theatre and Film alongside dancers from the company.

UBC Journal of Political Studies Open to Undergraduate Students
Submissions for the 2016 edition of the UBC Journal of Political Studies (JPS) are now open to current undergraduate students in any discipline.
The JPS is one of Canada’s premier undergraduate research journals. We are a blind peer- and faculty-reviewed journal that has been publishing the best of undergraduate political science work at UBC for 18 years. We publish articles across all subfields of political science, including but not limited to political theory, comparative politics, public policy, international relations, and Canadian studies.
The Journal is seeking high-quality papers written for upper-level UBC courses. To be competitive, papers should have received grades of 80% or higher. We welcome high-quality, relevant papers that were not written for course credit or that were written for courses outside of Political Science Students can submit up to two original, previously un-published submissions until December 23rd.
More detailed submissions information can be retrieved at our website, www.ubcjps.com, which also hosts digitized copies of the Journal that demonstrate the quality and variety of articles published in previous years.
Inquiries can be directed to Editor-in-Chief, Parmida Esmaeilpour, at editor.ubcpssa@gmail.com.
NOTE to busy students: If in doubt, just submit! If your paper meets the criteria, it has a good chance of being competitive in the peer- and faculty-review process. While we recommend incorporating edits given to you by your professor, this is by no means necessary. Trained editors will work with authors to polish their writing before publication.
Don’t miss this opportunity to get published early in your academic career!

Speaker bio: Jen Sung, Facilitator, artist-activist and co-conspirator at loveintersections.com
Jen Sungshine speaks for a living but lives for breathing life into unspoken situations in unusual places. As a queer, Taiwanese artist-activist based in Vancouver, BC, she is grateful to live, breathe, dance and work on the unceded, occupied and ancestral lands of the Coast Salish nations. She facilitates with creativity and social justice media to evolutionize and revolutionize QTIPOC visibility and community-based work through Our City of Colours, Love Intersections, Out in Schools and the Institute for Gender,Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. Her artistic practice involves unlearning while learning and learning while unlearning; and instead of calling you out, she wants to call you in – to make artful social change with her through the language of love and nerdy codes. She is very wordy.

2016 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme Recruitment – A Chance to Live, Work and Learn in Japan
Recruitment for the 2016 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is currently underway. Of the 54 participants sent from British Columbia, this past summer, over half (24) were former UBC students. We hope we will continue to receive many strong candidates from UBC for next year.
The JET Programme offers a minimum, one-year opportunity to experience Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) or Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) through an official Government of Japan program. ALTs work alongside Japanese teachers of English in the public school system, while CIRs are employed in local government offices. Participants gain valuable overseas work experience, learn about Japanese culture, and meet participants from around the world, while contributing to language education and international understanding.
Application forms and further details can be found on the Embassy of Japan’s JET Programme website: jetprogramme.ca. The deadline to apply for the 2016 JET programme is November 30, 2015.
In general, applicants are required to hold a bachelor’s degree (any discipline) by July 2016 and be a Canadian citizen, to apply through the Embassy of Japan in Canada. As the JET Programme involves 43 countries, non-Canadians should contact the Embassy of Japan in their home country about applying for the JET Programme.
The following information sessions will also be held at UBC:
Wednesday, October 7 – 5:30 to 7 pm in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Room 182, and Tuesday, October 27 – 12:30 to 2 pm in the Asian Centre Auditorium
We hope you will consider forwarding this message to your students, colleagues or others who might be interested in this opportunity to live and work in Japan. Thank you again for supporting our program.
Undergraduate Research Opportunites at UBC
Interested in research, but don’t know where to start? Become a mentee with Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO). URO runs the Research Experience Program (REX) during the UBC school year from September until March, with the aim of encouraging and facilitating undergraduate students into research. Mentees will be paired up with mentors who are experts in their field of study (PhDs, Masters, PostDocs, etc). You will then work closely with your group of mentees and mentor in order to tackle research problems and to gain valuable research experience. URO is currently looking for enthusiastic mentees who are interested in developing a theoretical research project which they will present as a poster at the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC). For more information and to sign up, please visit http://www.uroubc.ca/rex/
