I am currently researching the social history of early modern Japan with specific focus on Tokugawa-period contracts and their impact on the evolution of trust and cooperation among non-samurai. My interests involve the implications trust had for popular protests, market growth, and civil society, as well as the role of population change and other historical contingencies as the engines for trust.
