About
Shu-ting is a visiting lecturer at UBC. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Literature from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, where she began learning how to teach Mandarin to foreign students. She then pursued her Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University. Shu-ting has extensive teaching experience across Europe, Asia, and North America. She has taught Chinese at Heidelberg University in Germany, National Taiwan University’s Chinese Language Division and Graduate Program of TCSL, National Taiwan Normal University’s Mandarin Training Center. She has also taught at the Associated Colleges in China (ACC) and participated in the Duke Study in China Summer Program, gaining insights into contemporary Chinese society.
Before joining UBC, Shu-ting spent seven years teaching Chinese at Duke University, where she taught all levels of Chinese courses for both heritage and non-heritage tracks, including business Chinese and intercultural courses. In her teaching design, she integrates materials related to students’ lives and strives to make her courses meaningful. Her expertise lies in content-based advanced Chinese courses, and she has incorporated community-based learning into her curriculum. She aims to create an interactive, stimulating, and engaging environment that is also friendly, encouraging students to challenge themselves and elevate their language skills.
Shu-ting loves music, she plays drums and guitar to relax and unwind. She first visited Vancouver as a traveler in the winter of 2022 and fell in love with the city. She is excited to immerse herself in this new environment to experience its diversity and inclusivity, embrace Canadian culture, and gain more teaching experience.
Passionate about teaching, Shu-ting views it as her lifelong career. She hopes to bring her enthusiasm and professional expertise into the classroom, learn alongside UBC students, and looks forward to her new journey in Vancouver!
