Franklin Rausch, Ph.D. ’11 is currently an assistant professor at Lander University (Greenwood, South Carolina). As part of the History and Philosophy Department, he teaches core history classes, general-education world history classes, and upper level classes in Asian history.

Max Gruber graduated from our honours program in 2011 with a focus on China and Mandarin. He has spent a significant period of time living, studying, and working in China and currently works in Washington D.C. as an All-Source Analyst for BAE Systems focusing on national security issues for a government customer.

Oleg Benesch

Oleg Benesch graduated from our Ph.D. program and is currently an assistant professor at the University of York in the UK. His main project since leaving UBC has been his recently completed book, Inventing the Way of the Samurai: Nationalism, Internationalism, and Bushido in Modern Japan, which is due out from Oxford University Press September, 2014.

He currently runs MYK Enterprises, an inbound and outbound tour company that specializes in organizing various student programs such as school exchanges and customized study tours for both the Japanese and Canadian markets.

Katherine Tutschek

Katherine Tutschek, BA’09 of Mandarin Language and Culture, now works bilingually as a Communications Executive at RMJM Hong Kong, a Global Architects and Design Firm. Before her position at RMJM, she completed a language diploma in Cantonese in Hong Kong which led her to building up experience as a personal assistant in the finance industry, while doing freelance translation and interpretation.

Julia Ronmark, BA’04, began working as a production assistant and graphic designer for a Vancouver-based magazine, then worked for seven and a half years in the creative services department at a local newspaper. She is now self-employed and publishing her own publication.

Vickie Yau, BA ’03, MA ’08, currently lives in Hong Kong and is completing her doctorate in Education on the psychosocial influences of international and cultural experiences on student development. She also works part-time for a Foundation that aims to promote environmental awareness and understanding of a unique area in Hong Kong that is rich in environmental value and cultural heritage.
