The Canada preliminary round of the 2023 Quiz on Korea took place at the UBC Asian Centre on May 8. This event was jointly organized by the Korean Language and Culture program at UBC and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver to enhance international cultural awareness about Korea. Furthermore, this year commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea, adding to the significance of the occasion.
The event commenced with warm welcome messages from Consul General Jongho Kyun, Dr. Sharalyn Orbaugh, the Department Head of Asian Studies, and Dr. Donald Baker, Professor of Korean History and Civilization. After the welcoming remarks, participants engaged in interactive quiz games covering a range of topics, including Korean popular culture, cuisine, and proverbs.
Some participants also enthusiastically joined the random sing and dance activity and were rewarded with gift cards. The event was further enlivened by captivating performances from the UBC Taekwondo team and Zonic, a K-pop dance team.
Grand Prize Winner: Julianna Loresco
Julianna Loresco, who took the KORN102 course during the Summer Term of 2022 at UBC, won the Grand Prize and will be visiting South Korea in September for the final round of the quiz show.
First Place Prize Winner: Stephanie Zhong
Second Place Prize Winner: Danielle Chen
KORN 302 student, Stephanie Zhong, won the first-place prize and, Danielle Chen, a past Work Learn student for the Korean Language and Culture Program, claimed second place.
Third Place Prize Winners: Alden Chang, Evens Wong, and Janice Xu
Alden Chang, Evens Wong, and Janice Xu, received the third-place prizes.
