The 40th annual Powell Street Festival, running July 30th and July 31st, is a celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and history.  We are always looking for new volunteers to help bring the festival to life!  From set-up, to interacting with festival goers, to administration, there are a variety of positions available before, during and after the festival – truly something for everyone.

Call for Graduate Papers for the Ninth ISSCO Conference

The 9th International Conference of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO) will take place in Vancouver, Canada from July 6-8, 2016.
Founded in 1992 by Professors Wang Gungwu, Wang Ling-Chi and a multidisciplinary group of scholars, ISSCO is a scholarly organization that seeks to promote research and understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of Chinese migrants and their descendants living outside of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. ISSCO holds a major international conference every three years. Previous ISSCO international conferences have been held in San Francisco, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, Copenhagen, Beijing, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. ISSCO also holds smaller regional conferences on an annual basis. Previous ISSCO regional conferences have been held in Cuba, South Africa, New Zealand, Panama and other countries.

2017 MEXT Research Student Scholarship Now Available

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan is currently accepting applications for its 2017 Research Student Scholarship for foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.
The Research Student Scholarship is aimed at university graduates, born on or after April 2, 1982 (for the 2017 scholarship year) who wish to study as research students. The research study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field. The term of the scholarship is 18 months to two years (including 6 months of Japanese language training) starting in April or October 2017.
Application guides and forms are available on the Embassy of Japan’s website here. Deadline for the 2017 scholarship year: May 20, 2016. Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in late June/early July.
