You may have noticed a bunch of friendly new faces in the Asian Studies office. We are happy to introduce our six 2018W Work Learn Students!
Work Learn is an awesome program that provides a 10-hour a week position for students that wish to work in a professional environment on campus while achieving their own learning goals, building a professional network, and supporting their development of professional skills. Alex – Events Assistant
Alex is a third year student in the Bachelor of Media Studies Program. As the Events Assistant, Alex helps with event promotion, logistics, photography, and rentals at the Asian Centre, along with helping out around the office. She likes doing anything creative, watching movies, pizza, and sleeping. She will be attending Keio University in Tokyo during Term 2 for Go Global.
Cindy is a fourth year Film Production major with a minor in Japanese. Her main responsibilities are to make videos and other stories to showcase the impact of Department research, as well as the activities and achievements of our scholars, students and alumni. Cindy is also currently an executive of the recently founded AMS club, AMS Crayon Studio, which makes short entertaining videos to be published on various media platforms.
Echo – Office Assistant
Echo is a third year Arts student hoping to double major in International Relations and Asian Language and Culture Studies with a focus on Korea. Her Work Learn position is a mixture of office, communication, and events assistant, so she works on everything from student inquiries to room bookings to website maintenance. She is also a Residence Advisor in Place Vanier, so you can catch her taking care of first year students all year round. She is in the office nearly every day, come say hi!
Lisa is a second year student pursuing a BA in English Language with a minor in Asian Studies. As the Communications Assistant, she works on social media posts, newsletters and other content for the Department. She is also mildly obsessed with wholesome kermit memes, desserts, and changing her lock-screen image too often.
Michelle – Office Assistant
Michelle is an undergraduate student, currently in her third year of Asian Studies with a focus on Korea and really hoping to go on exchange to South Korea at some point. In the office, she helps man the front desk, assists with course registration and responds to email inquiries. Outside of work she is a hip hop dancer and has a huge interest in being outdoors and meeting new people.
Sophie is an undergraduate student, planning on spending her 3rd year abroad in South Korea. She assists with managing the main phone, front desk, and Department email. She also assists in course registration and scheduling, and can likely advise you on how to sort your waste properly.
On any given day, you can find Sophie working as a UBC Sustainability Ambassador, hiking with her friends and coworkers, and enjoying all that Vancouver has to offer!
