Excitement for the upcoming school year buzzed in the air at this year’s Welcome Back Lunch on Imagine Day. About 80 students, 20 faculty members, 10 volunteers, and seven alumni participated, making for an engaging afternoon. While everyone mingled, students got the chance to interact with faculty, staff, and alumni at different booths for each language, as well as our alumni table. Japanese instructors dressed in colorful yukata and hosted fun games for students to practice some Japanese phrases, along with their chopstick skills. Ph.D. student Gurinder Mann taught some Bhangra dance moves to brave participants, while Dr. Tom Hunter, Lecturer in Sanskrit and South-South East Asian Studies, showed students another kind of rhythm on the tabla. As the event went on, it proved to be a wonderful space for reunions, new connections, and ultimately a shared sense of community in a department that many call home here at UBC. We’d like to thank our students, staff, faculty, and alumni for coming together to make the event a success.
