Wildfires in Jasper: UBC addresses various initiatives

The town of Jasper, nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is grappling with the aftermath of one the most devastating wildfires in its history. The blaze, which began on July 26, has scorched over 32,000 hectares of land, leaving insurmountable destruction.

Driven by dry conditions and strong winds, the wildfire rapidly spread through Jasper National Park, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists. As of latest reports, Park Canada estimates that approximately one-third of Jasper’s infrastructure has been destroyed, including homes, businesses, and historic landmarks. These damages are estimated to cost $500 million.

This disaster is a stark reminder of the increasing frequency of wildfires – a phenomenon closely linked to climate change. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and changing weather patterns are contributing to drier conditions and more intense fire seasons. In response to these challenges, UBC has been involved in addressing wildfire challenges through various initiatives.

Here are some key efforts:

Center of Wildfire Coexistence

UBC’s Faculty of Forestry has established the Centre of Wildfire Coexistence (CWC), led by Dr. Lori Daniels. The center focuses on revolutionary wildfire preparedness and management in BC, particularly community outreach to ensure communities are prepared for wildfires.

Cooperative Community Wildfire Response Project

UBC researchers are involved in the Cooperative Community Wildfire Response Project. This project explores cooperative opportunities for Indigenous groups and agencies in wildfire response, highlighting Indigenous leadership and traditional ecological knowledge.

Wildfire Management in Community Forests

UBC’s Tree Ring Lab has identified priorities for wildfire management in community forests. The lab provides reports on fire-focused management approaches and integration of Indigenous knowledge.
