Meet the 2021/2022 Lecturers of the Year
Since September 2014, the Department of Asian Studies has been awarding annual prizes to two Lecturers to recognize and celebrate excellence in teaching in the Lecturer rank. Dr. Sharalyn Orbaugh, Professor and Department Head, announced this year’s two recipients.

Since 2020, Asian Studies graduate students Miaoling Xue, Saeko Suzuki, and José Manuel Escalona Echániz have been collaborating with Dr. Christina Laffin to create a video series named “Exploring Premodern Japan” that capture aspects of research on premodern Japan.
Boundaries Transcended: Recap of the 2022 Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies 3MT Competition
The Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies 3-Minute Thesis Competition was held at the UBC Asian Centre Auditorium on April 1, 2022. As a burgeoning academic forum, the Conference serves as an ideal platform for undergraduate students to present their research discoveries, engage in scholarly discussions, and build learning communities for studies on China and the Chinese speaking world.
